The "millions of unpaid packages" narrative misses how FOSS actually works. Engineers usually fix issues to scratch their own itch, then upstream the PR to avoid maintaining a fork.
The incentives are different:
Pride: Being a contributor is a badge of honor. In Bitcoin we all know that.
Conviction: You get a "passion discount" because devs would rather build something meaningful than sell their soul to a corporate job.
If you pour stupid amounts of money into these projects, you stop attracting idealists and start attracting mercenaries and psychopaths.
