I’m not familiar with Asian or Latin American cultures, but in Africa, the native societies were traditionally collectivist. Before the arrival of colonists, African tribes did not have a concept of individualism. This was largely because, in many African tribes, if someone failed to meet the expectations of the chief or the community, they could be exiled. Being cast out often meant facing the dangers of the wild, like lions and hyenas, which would quickly lead to their demise.

This is likely why Fidel Castro believed that capitalism had little success in Africa—because many African tribes already functioned in a way that resembled socialism. This historical collectivism is also a reason why many African countries have socialist tendencies today.
