I have cut pine that's a few hundred years old and it still smells like a fresh pine forest... unlike the stuff you buy from the stores today which doesn't seem to have an odour at all.
It also shows you how much we have fecked up forestry and the soil of these places in general. Plants that are in healthy ecosystems with rich soils produce more secondary metabolites that produce things like terpenes e.g pinene which is where the smell comes from.
