NIP-08 described an older way to mention people and notes inside text. Newer Nostr clients generally use NIP-27 for this job.

This page is still useful because older or superseded NIPs explain why some clients behave the way they do. Even when the wider Nostr ecosystem moves toward newer designs, understanding NIP-08 helps people recognize legacy content and see how the protocol has evolved.
