NIP-17

Private direct messages

NIP-17 is a modern private-message design for Nostr. It uses wrapped events so the private message can travel through relays while keeping the actual message content hidden from people who should not read it.

The goal is to make direct messages feel normal for users while leaking less information than older approaches. It works with related encryption and wrapping NIPs to make private chats more portable between clients.
