NIP-49

Private key encryption

NIP-49 describes how to encrypt a private key with a password. This helps people back up or transfer keys without storing them as plain text.

NIP-49 is one of the small agreements that lets different Nostr apps understand the same kind of activity. In everyday terms, it is like agreeing on the shape of a form: once everyone uses the same form for private key encryption, people can move between apps without losing the meaning of what they created.
