Best UX for a browser key signer so far. And the nsec is encrypted using PBKDF2/AES-GCM, then stored in chrome.storage.local, so other potentially malicious addons can't get to it. In my broad testing across multiple browser key signers last year, only Alby did this, though I don't know if others have added it since. Sidecar also has a better UX than Alby. I'm thinking about replacing Alby with Sidecar in NoorNote's onboarding wizard because Sidecar is better for beginners right now. Alby is harder for beginners to understand, and in the past it also had the bad habit of changing the UI more often. I actually don't like that, but I accepted it because of the encryption. Others store the nsec in plain text in the browser. The UI flow of a browser key signer needs to be decided early, and after that it shouldn't change too much.

Okay so for all you Claude Code beginners let me share a pro tip with you.
All those extra features in Claude Code like CLAUDE.md, Memory, Skills, Hooks etc. that are supposed to help jog Claude's memory are not worth a damn. Forget it, they are just dirty marketing lies. Know why? Because Claude ignores them all the time anyway. Because of a deeper bias programmed in it.
You can write important rules all over your project or even cover your whole screen with them. The damn LLM agent will simply ignore them anyway. Don't fall for these gimmicks.
So what actually helps then? You. You are the one who has to keep control, the one with the long term memory, the one who has to repeat the rules again and again and the one who holds the project together. No one else. Just you.

Yeah I've tried that too. Several times actually. Projects like that always ended up failing even with really high quality products and services you can't find anywhere else. Muslims say they'll support other Muslims products and services but in reality they don't. What they actually buy from other Muslims are prayer rugs and Adhan clocks and that's it. For everything else they go straight to the big name brands. But hey you can always give it a shot and try your luck. Maybe the timing is better now.

Before we even talk about whether some idea or feature could appeal to the masses, we should first figure out if we actually want the masses here and if we're even capable of handling them. Do we have the technical capacity for that? Are we culturally ready for it? Can we deal with the consequences at all? For example the whole developer cult would be over here, and devs would just fade into an even less appreciated background, not being the heros here anymore. And how much can we really simplify the complexity of a decentralized network anyway?
If we do that we'd probably run into the same messy issues we see on legacy social media, even without any algorithm. More AI slop, rage baiting, spineless people selling themselves ... etc. And this time for zaps, not even for attention alone. It's not like we don't already see the first signs of that here too, but they're still pretty small and we can keep them under control for now. Then the OGs would just sit around complaining that everything was better before the undisciplined masses showed up.
We've already seen long periods without algorithms on Facebook and Twitter. It only takes a few persons, like those npub zap fans, to come along with the idea of "algorithmic relays ☝" and everyone gets excited, and the same cycle starts all over again.
What I'm getting at is that the problem is already baked into the desire for comfort itself. Or to put it more bluntly, into how much we're willing to cater to the masses' desire for convenience. That's where the real issue lies. I wrote about this some time ago.

Personally I don't see any real happiness or harmony in always chasing comfort and refusing to get your hands dirty. This craving for convenience is exactly what turned everything so centralized, corporate and fiat in the first place. It's all about your personal mindset and discipline. There's a reason that old Turkish saying exists: "Nerede çokluk, orda bokluk", meaning "where there are lots of people, there's a lot of shit". And that pattern has never changed.

It's a great video compressor. I've now integrated it into #NoorNote's media uploader. In my test upload, it compressed a 94.5MB video that I'd recorded on the phone down to 9.4MB. Considering that a lot of media and Blossom servers in the free tier only allow uploads up to 20 to 30MB, that's pretty useful.
Right now it's only on https://noornote.app/ . It'll come to desktop and mobile with the next release. And the next release won't happen until a big feature I'm working on is mature enough to release.

Okay, looks like my next distro is gonna be MX Linux. Because of all the systemd and age verification issues. Ubuntu and Fedora are totally out of the question for that reason, they want compliance.
MX Linux is deb based too and supposedly has this cool software center that pulls together all the package sources. People are already migrating from Ubuntu to it because of that. And no Flatpak crap. I'll probably go with KDE Plasma, I've got tons of RAM in my laptop. I can afford it. 😏

Oh and the whole thing is implemented like an addon (new architecture). That means you can turn this feature on and off. When it's off, no marketplace code gets loaded into the app, and your client stays just like it was before.

Is anybody here using Nym VPN? I discovered them about a year ago, and last year the connection was not very stable. Then they did a user survey, and I guess everyone complained about that. This year it's running very smoothly. It's my favorite VPN provider at the moment. And apparently websites still don't recognize them as a VPN. Whenever I run into a situation where well known VPNs get blocked, I turn on Nym and it works.
(And no, I am not associated with them in any way and I don't get anything from them for advertising or anything like that.)

Hmm, I do not agree with that. Web apps depend on web servers, and unless you are running the entire infrastructure with server and network connection in your basement, you are just as dependent on third parties and can be taken down.

How do you best promote Nostr?
That's what I was thinking about the other day. Pretty simple: By not mentioning a single word about Nostr. Haha.
I know, some folks here are gonna get allergic reactions and break out in pimples around their mouths, but the underlying protocol, all those technical nitpicks, or even relays... none of that means anything to newcomers. The average person only cares about the client. That's what they see, that's what they use.
And when you're promoting, you don't talk about how awesome your own client is or what cool features it has, like how #NoorNote has killer NIP-51 list management, or how it shows quoted reposts as replies under the note, or how it can handle and create NIP-71 video content. All of that is soooo boring. The average person has no idea what to do with any of it.
Instead, you do a total U-turn back to Nostr's features and promote why someone should even bother using a Nostr client in the first place. I know, some people are getting even more pimples around their mouths right now. But hey, that's just my hypothesis. If you think you know better, go ahead and try whatever you want. Feel free to ramble on about protocols and NIPs and relays for all I care.

I don't agree. You say the consolidation phase is over and we should just improve the existing clients? A lot of devs are doing that, but the forks still don't succeed and only stay accessible to two or three users. And by now, whole capital funded companies have sprung up around these open source projects, running their own strategies.
And regarding „they don’t offer anything“, you haven’t tried out NoorNote yet. A lot of new features in it. And if it’s still not enough, build your own client and show us all, what you mean.

People who have never coded anything complex with AI just don't get development, and they always react defensively to the topic by calling it "slop."
Yeah, you can throw together some slop in three hours with the latest models.
But you can also do more demanding stuff with it, and then it really turns into work.
Not necessarily the kind of work where you are slaving away writing code all the time like a programming drone, but you are constantly thinking about other things.
- Is my app usable, like the user experience?
- Does my architecture make sense? Am I reusing certain helpers and components consistently?
- If you are having it code a new Nostr app: What is the relay load? Am I channeling and caching queried data properly? And not sending the same queries to the relays over and over?
- How about security? Do a full security audit. How and where are sensitive data stored? What are the risks? How can you make it safer?
- How about performance? The whole app has gotten slower somehow. Where are the bottlenecks?
- How about encapsulation? AIs still handle this sloppily, and you have to keep disciplining them on it.
- How do I get a consistent UI? Things like design patterns, atomic design, BEM naming schemes, mobile first principles, and so on.
- Find code duplications, spot what can be modularized better. Refactor, refactor, refactor, and then test everything again for the hundredth time.
And a lot more. If you leave all these things completely to the AI, real crap comes out, and you notice it yourself pretty quickly that development starts dragging along and more errors pop up.
And then there are still tons of problems along the way that you have to solve yourself, because the AI with its narrow view just can't find a solution. That's when the human has to step in and think differently, get creative.
And now tell me that every developer out there who still codes the old fashioned way by hand is also thinking about all these aspects of development and mastering them. They exist, no doubt, but even without AI, a whole bunch of slop gets developed out there. Especially in companies where you have deadlines. You have no idea, how much BS they create under pressure. Accumulating technical debt for decades.
Coding is just one part of development that AI takes off your plate today and speeds up. For a bigger app, a lot more aspects come in where you just can't rely on the AI agent. Your role shifts from developer in a team to a technical project manager of a team full of autistic junior coders.
AI agents are like wild Arabian horses where you have to hold the reins tight and keep disciplining the animal. If you let it run free, it goes great for three hours and then throws you off its back.

There's a new onboarding wizard for Nostr beginners!
This wizard doesn't just generate a key pair, it walks you through creating your profile, suggests some of the biggest relays (+ NIP-17 inbox relays!), and gives you the first options for following people through npub12rv5lskctqxxs2c8rf2zlzc7xx3qpvzs3w4etgemauy9thegr43sf485vg's follow packs ( https://following.space/ ), fully integrated, so your timeline doesn't stay empty. Other devs could even use it for their own desktop clients. It gets initialized once at the start in the terminal, and for renewing the trust session, the terminal pops up every 24 hours and asks for the password.
Not anymore.
I've heard newbies don't like the terminal. So NoorSigner now runs completely in silent mode. NoorNote takes over 100% control of NoorSigner. It handles the initialization, asks for the trust session password every 24 hours ... no terminal in sight anymore. It all happens in the background. NoorNote just passes it along to NoorSigner.
If you don't like that, you can switch off NoorSigner's silent mode in the settings, and then NoorSigner will pop up in its own terminal again.
But that's still not all.

By the way, #NoorNote isn't dead. I'm working flat out on a few new features. Refactoring, fixing small bugs, stabilizing, and really polishing the design. Maybe I'll put out an interim release in the meantime. Or maybe I'll wait a bit longer and do a big release a little later.

NIP-04: encrypts the message content but leaks metadata: anyone can see who is messaging whom, when, and how often, since sender/receiver pubkeys and timestamps are visible on relays.
NIP-17: fixes this by wrapping the encrypted message inside a gift-wrap (NIP-59): the outer event uses a random throwaway key, a randomized timestamp, and is sealed so relays and observers cannot see the real sender, receiver, or timing. The actual message is only visible to the intended recipient after unwrapping two layers of encryption.
In short: NIP-04 = encrypted content, public metadata. NIP-17 = encrypted content + protected metadata.
