My First Bitcoin announces its 7th Bitcoin Educators Unconference! Following the successful events in San Salvador, Madeira, and Nashville, we are heading back to the mountains of El Salvador for the third time: Cadejo Montaña.

The Unconference embodies the vision and mission of My First Bitcoin to educate and empower the world with Bitcoin knowledge, but also to provide a social layer for educators to connect.
My First Bitcoin aims to bring passionate Bitcoin enthusiasts together, fostering collaboration and networking. The event is rooted in the principles of an impartial, independent, decentralized, and community-led organization.
The focus: grassroots projects and Bitcoin education.
Unconference: "Everyone is a (potential) speaker"
Attendance is limited to 150 attendees, and contrary to regular conferences, an Unconference is a place where every attendee is a (potential) speaker. Everyone has the chance to pitch their ideas at the start of the event, which will subsequently be grouped in separate breakout rooms.
Previous Unconferences have been attended by a wide variety of educators, such as Ben Perrin, Julian Figueroa, Jeff Booth and Preston Push, but this event also welcomed many grassroots educational projects in the past, such as Bitcoin Ekasi, Amity Age, and Bitcoin Indonesia. It attracts builders and educators from all around the world.

Past editions brought fruitful discussions about global education networks, grassroots adoption, Bitcoin communities, gamification of educational resources, tools for the youth, and more.

On August 11th, we continued our mission to advance Bitcoin education worldwide. This time, in collaboration with Paystand, We had the opportunity to work with the Arhuaco community in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.

☀ Who are the Arhuacos?
The Arhuacos are an Indigenous people who view their territory as the “Heart of the World.” Their culture emphasizes harmony with nature, guided by their spiritual leaders, the Mamos. They speak Iku, dress in traditional white clothing with symbolic conical hats, and are known for crafting mochilas, handwoven bags with deep spiritual meaning. They are deeply connected to the land and actively defend it against threats like mining, armed conflict, and environmental harm. As “Elder Brothers,” they see themselves as guardians of Earth’s balance.
How Bitcoin Entered Their Lives The Arhuacos were introduced to Bitcoin at the Bitcoin Conference in Medellín, where Spanish-speaking members were invited by paystand.org to explore how Bitcoin could serve their community. There, they also met MotivPeru, whose work with the Quechua people sparked interest in visiting Peru to see Bitcoin in action.

🌱 A Connection with the Quechuas
In Peru, the Arhuacos saw how Quechua communities use Bitcoin for savings, commerce, and tourism. Their shared values helped form an instant connection: Nature-based spirituality Spiritual leadership Sustainable agriculture Communal living and reciprocity Preservation of language and identity Defense of territory and culture.
📕Three Days of Learning
Building on this experience, Paystand and My First Bitcoin organized a three-day educational program in the Arhuaco territory.

🎯 Goals
The goals of the training include roughly four long term goals. Firstly, to introduce Bitcoin as a tool to complement traditional bartering. Secondly, to promote financial autonomy through respectful, locally relevant education. Furthermore, we aimed to train community leaders to guide conversations around value, money, and freedom. Finally, the program included philosophical dialogue, hands-on activities, and value-driven lessons. At the end, each participant received a certificate of participation, symbolizing not just completion but a meaningful step toward financial empowerment.

May 13, 2025 – We are proud to announce that My First Bitcoin has received a $1 million grant from #startsmall. With this financial support from Jack Dorsey's philanthropic initiative, we will continue to serve grassroots Bitcoin education initiatives worldwide.
This grant accelerates our work in the creation and distribution of free and open-source Bitcoin education materials and infrastructure. It will not only help us improve existing resources, such as the Bitcoin Diploma, Bitcoin Intro Course, and teacher training workshops, but also to scale our digital platforms like our Online School and Community Hub.
As a non-profit, founded in 2021, we have grown from a local project into a global movement. Besides creating curricula and frameworks, our team has directly taught tens of thousands of in-person students, as we workshop and refine our materials based on real world feedback.
In 2023, we launched the Independent Bitcoin Educators Node Network, providing a space for others to join us on our mission. The network spans 65+ projects from 35+ countries, including circular economies, meetup organizers and other grassroots projects. All commit to the same six pillars: that their education is independent, impartial, community-led, Bitcoin-only, quality, and focused on empowerment over profit.
While we support that network, it is now self-governing. We always seek to give power-to, rather than have power-over.
John Dennehy, founder and Executive Director of My First Bitcoin, explains:
“The revolution of Bitcoin education is that it teaches students HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Funding from sources with their own incentives is the greatest vulnerability that threatens that. Education will be captured by whoever funds it. We will never take any government money and frequently turn down funding from corporations and companies. The subtle influence of funding has ruined fiat education and we need to create alternative models for the revolution of Bitcoin education to realize its full potential.”
Funding for Bitcoin education must be transparent.
This grant is a huge win for all of us. For Bitcoin itself, but even more for Independent Bitcoin Education as a whole. It enables us to serve the global community better than ever before. It shows everyone what can be achieved if you stay close to your values. “My First Bitcoin is a proof-of-concept for all independent Bitcoin educators that if you stay on the mission, even when it's challenging, then you will come out the other side even stronger,” added Dennehy.

🆕 Update on the Youth Curriculum we have been working on, alongside the The Little HODLer and the El Salvador government.
In May 2024 we signed an MOU with the Bitcoin Office El Salvador
to contribute to the creation of a Youth Curriculum for the school system in El Salvador. As we never take any government funding—to always be independent—our condition was that the material created be open-source and free to use by any educator in the world. This has generated a lot of interest and we are receiving lots of questions about when the books will become available.
There are three parts to a project such as this: content, design & distribution. We have only been involved with the first part and our work there is complete. As far as we know the launch will be in late May and after that the open-source version will be available online.

This week @EducacionSV (MINED) took charge of bitcoin education in the public school system in El Salvador.
Why is this great news?
MINED is now fully capable of teaching bitcoin education in the school system, which means 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧—and together we can teach even more people!
Let’s rewind…
My First Bitcoin began in August 2021 when there was no bitcoin education in El Salvador, except from the OG circular economy project, @Bitcoinbeach.
The first months we spent recruiting locals around the nation who were interested in teaching in their own communities—in houses, churches, cafes, parks, literally anywhere and everywhere we could. By early 2022 school directors began to ask if we could teach in their schools while they waited for a government program. We dove in, creating a new 10-week curriculum. There was incredible curiosity in those early days and as the first to teach about Bitcoin in the school system, we did our best to satisfy that need.
In late 2022, after plenty of real-world testing and improvements, we open-sourced the Bitcoin Diploma.
In 2023 the government used our Diploma as its primary source material to build its own custom version. We held classes for MINED admin and managerial staff and, along with Bitcoin Beach, we trained 500 public school teachers, who then began to teach in their own schools. After the last training group was finished in 2024, we told MINED that we believed they were ready, suggested they form a Bitcoin Department in order to really scale, and that we’d be happy to help.
Last week MINED instructed schools we were working at to cease activities with us, presumably because they are ready to lead. At one of the schools where we were teaching we had already told the students and announced publicly that we planned a big graduation for them at the end of April. @NodeNationSV has taken over the Bitcoin Diploma program there, and thankfully those students will still get a graduation the same week we had planned for them. Late April is also when two new workbooks for children (grades 2 & 3), that we collaborated on with the Little HODLer, will launch in the public school system.
It's been an honor to be a part of this. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐃.
Bitcoin education in the public school system has come a long way. Each year we taught more students in the school system–from hundreds to thousands to tens of thousands, and we are hoping that growth will continue with government and allied educators.
𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 to take charge rather than to dictate to them. Empowering others is Bitcoin; consolidating control is fiat.
This change will also allow us to accelerate the international work we began in 2023–creating open-source tools and frameworks that any independent educator can tap into. That self-governing network is now active in 𝟑𝟗 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 and growing quickly.
The future is bright for #BitcoinEducation, both here in El Salvador and around the world! 🌎

🙏🏼 Update on where our funding comes from so far this year (through Q3):
▪️ 77% Grassroots
▪️ 5% Grants
▪️ 18% Corporate
▪️ 0% Government
Our historical numbers (from founding until December 31, 2023) are 65% Grassroots, 22% Corporate, 13% Grants and 0% Government.
How do we categorize our funding?
➖ Grants are from a foundation
➖ Corporate means a sponsorship from a corporation
➖ Grassroots is individual donors and everything else, such as a Charity Auction we had this year in April
Next Quarter & Next year
We expect the biggest % of Q4 to be from ‘Grants’.
In the future, we may adjust our categories. There is some funding that could be categorized as either Corporate or Grants, so we may combine those. We may also create a new category for Sales & Services, which would start small, but hopefully grow with time. For example, this would include merch sales, which currently count toward Grassroots.
Next year, we plan to keep this updated quarterly as part of our commitment to be transparent with our funding—expect greater transparency with everything.
‘Open-source Everything’ is a great slogan. We will work hard to turn it into a proof-of-concept for a better world.

A few weeks ago, we wrote that we were nearly out of funds and needed the community's help. Throughout this process, we have strived to be as transparent as possible with our finances — both about how we raise money, but also how we spend it.
We hope this becomes the standard for all #bitcoin education projects We cut salaries, delayed expenses and were days away from running out of funds. But no more! 💖

We received the funding to get us to some larger grants that we expect to receive near the end of the year. We bridged the gap — thanks to YOU.
With crisis comes opportunity. We are stronger now for a few reasons...
1️⃣ We will implement an aggressive savings mechanism soon to build up reserves and avoid any future repeats.
2️⃣ We made a regular, annual schedule for grassroots funding campaigns (once in spring in El Salvador, once in fall online).
3️⃣ We've made significant internal structural changes to ensure better internal communication This isn't easy. Funding the project will always be a challenge. We will NEVER compromise our values or impartiality for funding — which eliminates most traditional sources.
We will also continue to build out a global infrastructure for all independent bitcoin educators and give it all away (open-source everything). We are majority grassroots funded from people like you. and we hope you continue to give and help us grow.
My First Bitcoin is a grand experiment to test the limits of what's possible today in order to reimagine what's possible tomorrow.

I have a sad share story to share--but it's also a potent reminder of what we are fighting for
We had invited @MukunguFelix
to come to @BitcoinAtlantis
last week, as part of the @MyfirstBitcoin_ team
Felix is a Bitcoin Education superstar--last year he joined the @MyfirstBitcoin_ Node Network and taught the #BitcoinDiploma to 16 students. This year over 300 have already signed up. That's in addition to his goal of onboarding 100 local businesses in Nairobi
He teaches online so while it is mostly Kenyans, students can join from anywhere. A star pupil last year--
@PallabJD1 -- was so inspired that he continued studying, translated the Diploma into his local language of Assamese, started his own Bitcoin Education project and is the first node to join our network from India
All of the above accomplishments were achieved with almost no financial support
For the Feb 29th @MyfirstBitcoin_ Education Unconference we set aside 21% of all ticket sales to a grant for the network. The network is self-governing and choose Felix to receive this grant of about $1,000
The closing of the Unconference was meant to be the announcement and transfer of funds to Felix--showing a tangible example of how we can support each other
Felix wasn't there. Despite having all the required papers, supporting documentation, paid hotel and travel reservations, he was not granted a visa. There are no stamps in his passport--he has still never left Kenya in his life
Felix will still receive the grant--because #Bitcoin does not require permission
I've never met Felix in person and was disappointed that that will have to wait, but this is a potent reminder of what we are fighting for. We are fighting for a world in which Felix was there with all of in Portugal last week. We are fighting for a world in which we--not some politician or bureaucrat--get to define our own destiny

In November we tried something new
We hosted an Independent Bitcoin Education Unconference in El Salvador
We planned some speakers, but also left time at the day's start for everyone present to participate in filling out the rest of the schedule. The goal, like so much of what
@MyfirstBitcoin_
does, was to try and learn from #Bitcoin itself and move toward decentralization and giving agency to the individual
It was a wild success. So much so that we decided to organize them internationally in 2024. We will continue to learn, document the process & open source everything by this years end. We believe that our particular version, focused on grassroots Bitcoin education efforts, will create stronger communication channels to share best practices, strengthen individual projects and speed up the timeline. We also hope to encourage others within the Bitcoin space to apply the concept in their own way, within their own focus

Adopting BTC El Salvador)
What is an unconference & why did we choose this format?
An unconfernce is decentralized and meant to empower the individual participant at the expense of a centralized body. In a true unconference the agenda isn't even set ahead of time, but rather at the start of the day by whoever attends.
We'll do a hybrid model for this first attempt:
The event will be divided into three areas. Indoors will be a more traditional setting with speakers, a stage, a microphone and lots of chairs facing one direction. Outside there will be a pre-organized space for thematic discussions, each with a lead to keep the group on track, but open for all to contribute. In the true spirit of an unconference, which is decentralized and where content and direction is decided by all participants, there will be an additional space outside whose schedule will be made the day of the event.
Why this format?
Because part of the mission of
@MyfirstBitcoin_
is to empower the individual; another part is to reimagine what's possible. This means we try a lot of new things. Then we learn from the experience and we do it better the next time.

I’m a 18 year old salvadorian who just came out from high school, where I had the chance to graduate from

Here’s my story🧵🔻
I was born in Concepción de Ataco⛰️, western #ElSalvador
And I’ve been working since I was 11 years old, in areas like construction & tourism.
So Proof-Of-Work has been present all my life⚙️🏋️‍♂️🛠️
Ever since, I’ve tried to reason why people in my country worked so much for so little money😔
Earning 6 dollars a day doing construction wasn’t feasible for me anymore❌, so I quit without knowing there was an opportunity ahead: #Bitcoin
In 2021 I heard a ‘magic internet money’ would be declared legal tender in #ElSalvador
Even though I didn’t knew anything about it, I got excited just to know a different type of money rather than the US Dollar would be circulating in my country.
Of course, I started to see a lot of resistance against Bitcoin among my neighbors.
People talked about volatility, scams & politics, but something said to me @nayibbukele decision about #Bitcoin was the right one for #ElSalvador
So I did like @ODELL says: “stay humble & stack sats” 🙏
I said to myself “people are not afraid of #Bitcoin, they’re just scared of the unknown”
That’s where I realized #education was everything El Salvador needed.
One day, my school called the students to get into the #BitcoinDiploma
I applied & excelled, thanks to our incredible teacher Napoleon Osorio,
@elisuademo, who also gave me & @VianaMPB the opportunity to become teachers.
We were selected among 60 students! We said YES!
We now proudly educate people in the western region of #ElSalvador
This job has brought me opportunities I never thought possible.
It allows me to work, continue my studies & meet people while passing this knowledge to students not too younger than me
That way, I’ve been able to socialize and visit places I never imagined.
I've also had the chance to meet the amazing stories of My First Bitcoin team.
Listening to their experiences & how they talk about #Bitcoin has expanded my knowledge about this topic.
I’m also training & teaching the #BitcoinDiploma to a group of 8 senior professors at Antonio J. Alfaro school in Concepcion de Ataco, where I went to high school.
I did #startsmall, but now I’m leading #Bitcoin education in my hometown!
Being an inexperienced young person and having this opportunity is such a privilege
I want to show people what #Bitcoin is (and what it’s not).
For me it represents freedom as individuals and as a country 🇸🇻.

How did I end up here?
This my story
After traveling around France for 4 months during the pandemic, I sold my car & left in February 2022, to go travel Mexico.
There I rapidly met @SamSuarez08 , who's now my girlfriend 🫶
We've been traveling together ever since in Mexico, Guatemala & El Salvador.
I decided to go visit SV after the #Bitcoin law was passed, to verify myself whether this was a top-down or bottom-up movement.
It resulted in a life changing-experience for everyone involved.
Let me tell you…
When we arrived in San Salvador in August 2022, I immediately tried to join a #Bitcoin meetup.
That's when we met the team of @npub17cy…4ml3:@jrivaszep, @daxsosa, @pilamaHT,@elisuademo, @criptoluis and more.
When I realized there was an NGO based in #ElSalvador, providing #Bitcoin education, my immediate thought was:
"That’s the grassroot movement I've been looking for" 🔍🙌
Fast forward to March 2023.
After participating in two #BitcoinDiploma’s, and flying back and forth between SV & Mexico, I was now working on my #Bitcoin coaching business, when I received a call from

He asked me if I wanted to provide #Bitcoin education to the locals of a beautiful tropical island in #ElSalvador
That tropical island is called La Pirraya. It’s a beautiful place that’s been inhabited for only 40 years!

I'm not gonna lie, at first I said something that sounded like "No, thank you!"
I had already been there & I knew how small and isolated the island was, so I got scared.
But I told him I would think about it, just in case…💭
After a day or two, I made a decision.
If the only reason not to go live this experience was "I'm scared", it wasn't good enough.
So I went. And @SamSuarez08 went with me!
It’s now been 2 months since we moved to La Pirraya 🌴.
We’re working hard to help this small community attract tourism & grow a circular economy, using #Bitcoin, sustainable practices, technology & education.
In the last 2 months we have:
1. Restored & reopened the communal house
2. Installed a Starlink antenna there (providing Internet connection)
3. Taken out trash out of the island
4. Repaired the beach soccer stands
5.Visited & toured the island with Bitcoiners
👏💪🛠️
All of this has been an important challenge, but above all an amazing experience I’ll remember all my life.
I'm proud to take part in this higher mission.

OUR VISION: How to change the world in three simple steps
My First Bitcoin is built around a core concept: that independent, impartial, community-led Bitcoin education will change the world.
This isn't about Bitcoin, but rather what Bitcoin will teach us: critical thought, personal responsibility and ultimately self-sovereignty. It teaches us to lower our time preference and look further into the future—and that changes everything. When we have control over our lives and future, it encourages us to build and plan.
Bitcoin allows us to define our destiny.
Our highest-level strategy has three prongs:
First; create an example in El Salvador that demonstrates and documents Bitcoin education as a tool for empowerment at mass scale [Mi Primer Bitcoin—El Salvador]
As the first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, El Salvador will be an example for the world—we get to decide what sort of example that will be.
When used correctly Bitcoin is a tool that empowers individuals to make their own decisions and as educators introducing new people to the space it is extremely important that we never dictate to students but rather allow them to come to their own conclusions. In many ways this is the path of most-resistance, but it is also a cornerstone value.
Cooption is our enemy, and we will have to constantly confront it.
Fiercely resisting outside influence—from sponsors, governments or anyone else—will be difficult. It will mean that we will decline some opportunities, which is why the communities we serve will deeply value those that do understand and support the mission.
Even while we grow, we must always strive for quality. In fact, quality is MORE important than quantity. This means we need to always iterate and improve upon our offerings as well as always strive to improve ourselves. We need to be self-critical. We also need to forge new ground, which is difficult but necessary.
This first prong is the most important; it is what the next two are built upon.
El Salvador is the example.
Second; create a toolkit to make that example easy to copy by open-sourcing everything & creating easy, international communication channels [node network]
El Salvador is the focus, but the mission is the world.
This has never been done before.
Bitcoin can be humanity’s first revolution. In every previous ‘revolution’ we have fought over who has power, we now have a chance to change our very relationship with power.
As we grow, we will make a lot of mistakes and learn a lot of lessons. We operate on a Bitcoin standard in a fiat world. We must build new systems and trailblaze new paths.
When we open-source everything—not just educational materials but things like accounting, media, communication and even how we make decisions internally—then it will be much easier for anyone, anywhere to copy or iterate upon our template.
While we seek to create new systems and open-source everything, we are also building out a global decentralized communication layer—a network of nodes. Each node agrees to a basic core consensus about Bitcoin education—that it must be: independent; impartial; community-led, high-quality; Bitcoin-only; and teach empowerment.
The communication needs to be multi-directional. El Salvador is the genesis block but all of the nodes in the global decentralized network must be able to easily and independently communicate with each other to share their own best practices and lessons learned. This will dramatically speed up the timeline and increase the quality.
The network will have nodes in 21 nations by the end of this year.
This is a serious attempt to replace the existing order and making the status quo irrelevant. There will be resistance.
Diffusing the core ideas in a way that is efficient, decentralized and international will make it extremely resilient. Once something becomes unstoppable, it becomes inevitable.
We are building an unstoppable machine.
Third; create a common banner under which diverse interests can align--we don’t have to agree on other things, but independent, impartial, community-led bitcoin education is something for all to rally behind. A rising tide raises all boats. [advisory board]
By focusing solely on independent, impartial, community-led education, and doing so with complete transparency, we can create a common ground that everyone can support.
People come at Bitcoin from diverse perspectives, but, like Bitcoin itself, we want to encourage collaboration over competition.
There are lots of other great projects doing wonderful things but because our geographic vision is so broad (the world) we need to maintain a narrow focus on what we do. If it’s not Bitcoin education, then we will leave the task to others.
This common ground, that is difficult to oppose and easy to unite behind, manifests itself by creating an advisory board of all the diverse industry leaders and creating a common table. This will also lend legitimacy, which will allow the network to grow even faster. This will incentivize industry leaders to be involved and create a positive feedback loop.
This common ground will manifest itself in the physical world at an annual charity Gala in El Salvador, which won’t just serve as a fundraiser but also to entrench that vision and give it physical space.

, I believe we are going to change the world.
Starting off 2022, I set a goal to find a purpose that aligns with making an impact & living a fulfilling life.
I craved something more meaningful & for the greater good.
There had to be more to life than inertia.
I discovered @npub17cy…4ml3
in April 2022 but attended a meetup in August.
Initially, I thought it was just a gathering of nerds to talk about nerd money.
Little did I know, they were passionate about using #Bitcoin education to change the world.
I spoke with Napo @npub18rj…fxch at the meetup. He was kind & welcoming.
I liked his patience & that he didn’t “pushed me” to get into #Bitcoin but to understand that is a tool to empower people’s life and our interaction made me realize the potential of this community.
Fast forward to March 2023, the team running

asked for help teaching the #BitcoinDiploma in Panajachel, Guatemala🇬🇹
My heart leapt at the opportunity!
Teaching in a predominantly Mayan community came w/ its challenges but bigger satisfactions.
People were reluctant to learn and now are realizing the potential of #Bitcoin and what financial education can bring to their lives.

Every day, our mission and work lead to something priceless.
The growth I've experienced, teaching people from diverse backgrounds & children, is fulfilling.
