People who consistently drink California Cabernets are usually thrown off by my wine. They aren't wrong because Taste Preference is Personal
But if you specifically drink California Cabernet Sauvs you are drinking one of the most commoditized products in the wine world.
High end California Cabernet can be World Class. It can be amazing wine.
The problem is that most California Cabernet is not World Class. It is styled and manipulated to fit a very specific flavor profile.
Deviate from that and it's suddenly "not what a Cab should taste like."
That single phrase tells you everything about how narrow the template has become.
Peony Lane is different and that's the point. I do not make California wine in the mountains of Colorado.

Most businesses are waiting to get through Thanksgiving so they can start their huge Black Friday Sale. It is a big day for sales volume, so I get it.
I found much more value in Thanksgiving itself though.
This is the difference between focusing on brand and focusing on sales.
I was bombarded with people reaching out or posting that they were drinking Peony Lane Wine with their family for their Thanksgiving meal.
Whether they opened it because it is their favorite wine or because they wanted to tell their family they bought it with Bitcoin, they drank my wine during the most important meal of the year.
No Black Friday sale can compare to that customer experience.
Did I miss out on some sales by not giving a huge discount and focusing on Black Friday? Definitely. But every company posting record volume days would kill for the brand equity created by being part of Thanksgiving dinner.

This dip feels like Deja Vu.
My goal for this bull run was to get out of debt with as much bitcoin as possible, but as we kept ranging above $100k, I kept waiting for "just one more pump".
It never came.
So now I'm facing the potential of another bear market with business debt that I swore to myself I would pay off.
Deep bear corrections are brutal. That's why staying humble and stacking sats is so important. When the tide goes out, it goes out far and any weak hands will be tested.
My debt choice wasn't particularly greed-oriented. Starting a winery is a capital and time-intensive business. Debt was necessary. Once I discovered Bitcoin, my choice was always between paying down low-interest loans or stacking sats. Easy choice, but freedom is my goal and being debt-free is something I'm dying to be.
I'm still bullish for 2026, but who knows where we go from here. CAN YOU TAKE ME LOWER?

For me it's a combination of a lot of things.
I can't scale up my own vineyard all that well and expect Bitcoin return on capital.
Now that I have some track record of sales, I could probably get a business loan to scale up the production, but I couldn't realistically expect that in the past given my lack of experience.
Then it kind of comes down to what kind of business do I want to run? That's always been my guiding light.
I don't really want to be fighting with distributors for a few cents per bottle, but I could definitely scale up and open a tasting room here and figure something out that way. There are a lot of other businesses that do that and have success.
Right now, I'm enjoying the freedom at this size and that may change in the next few years

Running Peony Lane has shown me how wineries scale and why many do not want to.
With red wine, every production increase takes more than two years to pay off. Early on, you just make wine and figure out sales later because scaling production has no shortcuts. Overproduction is a calculated risk in the beginning and a massive undertaking once you are established.
Sales come in two main forms:
Direct to consumer through a tasting room and online.
Wholesale to liquor stores and restaurants, usually with a distributor who takes a cut.
DTC is the highest margin, but hard to scale volume.
Wholesale is incredibly low margin, so you need huge volume for it to work.
This creates a structural gap in winery sizes.
Small wineries live and die on DTC. If they get a little bigger than their DTC can support, they push the excess into wholesale accounts. Wholesale moves wine, but the real value is exposure. It becomes a marketing play and a liquidity provider more than a profit center.
Large wineries flip the relationship. Tasting room sales become a rounding error for net profit, so the tasting room becomes their marketing play. They use the physical experience to win loyalty, because on a wine list it is easy to look like just another bottle.
There is a massive chasm between these two sizes.
The rough rule of thumb is that being small works up to about 10,000 cases per year. Beyond that, you enter no man's land until you reach the economies of scale that start to matter around 40,000 cases. Without a nationally recognized wine region behind you, crossing that middle zone is nearly impossible.
Colorado's biggest limitation is scale.
We make good wine, but not enough to force national attention.
It is the classic chicken and egg problem.
The region needs scale to get recognition, and recognition to get scale.

People tell me all the time, "Ben, we need to get your wine into this restaurant."
Here's why I say no.
When I started Peony Lane, I had no idea what direction I wanted to take things. I began at farmers markets because I needed first-hand sales experience. I wanted to see if my wine had enough traction to survive, and after investing much more than everything I had, I needed sales before I could think about the next stage.
At the time, I thought that next stage would be a tasting room in my hometown.
Community has always been huge for me. I figured I'd build it by creating the kind of space I wanted to spend time in. The "if you build it, they will come" idea. I'll meet the right people if I build the place they'll all want to gather in.
On the road to getting there, I ended up finding the community I really needed online. We centered around one big idea, Bitcoin, and once I found that, I realized I couldn't find many of the connections I really wanted outside of it.
So when I turn down restaurants or liquor stores that want to carry my wine, it's not because I don't want to grow Peony Lane. It's because I've learned what actually drives me.
I don't get energy from just making and selling wine. I get it from producing value for my community. As soon as my wine becomes just another bottle on a shelf or menu, all the excitement disappears for me.
Sure, it would be nice to make those sales, but fulfilling wholesale orders takes energy that pulls me away from what brings me joy. Focus is scarce, and I want mine aimed at what matters.
If there's one thing I've learned about entrepreneurship, it's that consistency is everything when it comes to survival. New opportunities pop up all the time, but knowing when to say no is the difference between building something lasting and burning out.
To make it anywhere in business, you need to be pumped about your goal, and I quickly realized that just making really good wine wasn't enough for me.
What drives me is giving people the same experience I had when I realized wine doesn't have to make you feel bad afterward. Educating about wine in a way that isn't pretentious and getting back to basics: Does it taste good TO YOU? How do you feel the next day?
It's deeply gratifying to show that you can make a great product, focus only on serving your community, and still win in a real way.
Business has never really been about the money for me, which is ironic given that all our Bitcoin community cares about is fixing THE money.

Just when you’re amped up to make a massive life change, ready to start the next chapter of your life, when you have all this momentum to do things, the only thing you can do is wait.
From the day I committed my life’s savings to starting Peony Lane to the day I made my first sale was two years.
That frustratingly long stretch of time was a gift I didn’t know I needed.
Before wine, I’d bounced between side projects where I lost steam quickly. I knew I wanted to start a business, and I knew I needed something that forced me to commit. I needed a forcing function that would make me step up into a role I knew I was capable of, but didn't have a reason to take on.

Those two years of waiting became the foundation for everything that came next. I not only produced good wine on my first try, but also built the house I live in today and discovered Bitcoin.
I get asked how Bitcoin changed me. It didn’t. I changed me, and that change led me to Bitcoin.
I never really want to go through another time like that again, but I’m glad I did. If another one comes, I know I can handle it.
That stretch from 2019 to 2021 was the most important time of my life. It’s when I decided to step up instead of settle.

It's okay if you don't want to spend Bitcoin, others do.
If you want to vote with your money to make a better world, spending your Bitcoin at businesses that value it is the most powerful. Spending your dollars at these places still makes a massive difference, but it ranks lower.

Winemaking is both an art and a science.
There are metrics you can use to judge when to pick, and what to add to the wine to manipulate it in the cellar, but you can't put a number on good taste.
So how do you know when a wine is done?
In short, you never really can, but winemakers have to make practical decisions. Space in the cellar is limited, and many times a wine is "done" because another wine needs that barrel or because the winery needs more product to sell.
Despite these practical timing demands, winemakers find ways to do little experiments on the side because they are curious at heart. Unfortunately, those experiments can take years to complete and we don't always have enough wine to do them annually.
From 2019 to 2022, I didn't have enough wine from my vineyard to take any risks, but in 2023, I finally got the massive, high-quality Pinot Noir harvest I had been hoping for ever since I started Peony Lane. I finally could experiment with extended aging.
Normally, I let my wines age for two years before release. They stay in the barrel for one year until the next vintage needs that barrel, then spend an additional year in the bottle.
For my experiment, I let one barrel of Estate Pinot Noir age for a second year in oak before its year in the bottle started.
I knew my Pinot was good, but trust me when I say this extra barrel aging took it to another level. It's going to take time, but I plan to move all of my Pinot to this aging plan.
I can't wait to share it with you, but it's going to be a bit.
There is no rushing good wine.

I used to advertise that my wine was naturally fermented. I've stopped.
I had never added yeast, but I learned that most "natural fermentations" aren't what they claim to be, including mine.
Yeast lives on everything. It's everywhere. So if you want a true natural fermentation, you'd have to work with fruit grown on your own land in a space where no fermentation has ever happened before.
I thought that as long as I didn't add yeast, it was a natural fermentation. Turns out the yeast my dad pitched once, back in 2007, is probably still the dominant strain.
I haven't tested it, but that was enough for me to stop calling my wines "natural."
Natural fermentation doesn't make wine healthier, but yeast drives flavor. The fewer outside inputs you have, the more the wine speaks for its place.
Many wineries add a heavy dose of sulfur at harvest to kill off natural yeast so they can start clean with a commercial strain. They want total control.
I don't do that. My grapes come in, start fermenting with whatever yeast lives in the vineyard, and finish with whatever's taken up residence here over time.
It's wine minutia. In the end, only two things matter:
Does it taste good?
How do you feel the next day?
I think you'll like the taste of my wine and by skipping the massive sulfur dose, you're one step closer to feeling great tomorrow.
