Always been the Achilles heel of Bitcoin - incentivizing developers. Satoshi was never paid, and he himself left soon after. That is the nature of developing on Bitcoin, it is a thankless task.
Best we can do is we build in a fashion that others can build to interop/on top of. Small blocks in a large ecosystem. Monolithic projects in Bitcoin will always fail because incentives are not strong enough to keep such large projects afloat.

Thanks. I didn’t see this particular one, but I know of Mostro and RoboSats. I also know of a few efforts to try to standardize order formats on top of Nostr. I guess n3xB is one of them.
Main difference I see is n3xB wants to establish a neutral protocol that uses nostr as the primary database. Where-as most other efforts are existing P2P trading solutions trying to have some level of inter-compatibility with each other, and using Nostr as a cache or backup to their central trade coordinators.
I see it as trying to make Mastodon work with Blue Sky, instead of creating Nostr. Still hoping for a Nostr like, common neutral protocol first approach to P2P solutions, along with a intercompatible layered approach. I took the first stab at it by creating a defined spec and a base library implementation. Will see if the developer community think this is a worthwhile approach vs the likes of Mostro/RoboSats etc that already exists

What if I propose to use the Nostr network to bootstrap a global decentralized P2P order book to exchange between fiat & Bitcoin? To no longer serve as a backup to centralized social media, but also as the defacto, natively decentralized and non-custodial way to onboard people to Bitcoin? Until all transactions in the world are conducted natively with Bitcoin, decentralized P2P is the best we’ve got. Native Bitcoin adoption will require price stability, and we are easily a decade away from widespread Bitcoin adoption at the mom and pop merchant level.
Platforms like Vexl is good. But they are like Blue Skys and Mastodon before Nostr. We need an open protocol for decentralized exchange. Not a lot of inter-incompatible little silos of centralized P2P solutions.
In particular, Vexl’s starting screen asking for my phone number tho, is not a good sign whatsoever…

Monero has its utilities, mostly as a stop gap for privacy transactions. But it has little chance to become the world’s store of value, medium of exchange, adefacto of account. To do so it requires a market cap and liquidity large enough such that there’s small enough volatility to be half of all of the world’s transactions. Its simply not happening.
Monero is the short time preference version of Bitcoin where it cannot wait for price stability and privacies properties to emerge. These properties are slow to emerge on Bitcoin because of the need to be a ‘sly and roundtable way to introduce something they can’t stop’. In fact, Monero is effectively slowed, if not already stopped, because its simply not sly enough. Monero is the idealistic but impossible perfect that is in the way of the practical and already working good that is Bitcoin.
Medium of exchange and privacy properties will continue to improve on Bitcoin, at a rate that will not overly alarm, and effectively penetrate the authoritarians. Only Bitcoin has a chance to truly separate money from the state and become the one defacto money for humanity.

I am not sure how Monero fixed bridging the global economy, which the majority still sell product and services only for fiat, into anything.
Not to mention those who held onto Monero instead of Bitcoin, has diminished in purchasing power relative terms.

Last year I posted about the n3xB project - a proposal for an open protocol to facilitate Bitcoin exchanging across a globally shared order book, hosted using Nostr.
A year later today, I got the idea a lot more fleshed out - including a Rust library implementing the protocol, along with a demo iOS/macOS application and demo videos showcasing how this can work.
Hoping to get more interest and feedback on the idea. The hope is to make this an open standard for the decentralized exchanging of Bitcoin, similar to how Nostr itself is an open standard for decentralized social media applications.

Gave it a quick read. Interesting on thinking about every layer as an order book. Unfortunate that CivKit was used as the example of an actual ‘order book’ built on top of Nostr, as the CivKit project is completely dropped as I understand it. Not to mention that CivKit, at least to me, is very complex. While n3xB is meant to be ‘naive’ (as simple as possible), if not at least to start with.
Whether Nostr is handling too much too quickly, whether Nostr will be a success, or whether n3xB will go anywhere at all, nobody knows. The good part of an open development landscape is anyone can pick up anything and experiment with it. And only through experimentations would we know what the free market will accept and find useful.

Things might have gotten a bit over-complicated. Let me try to untangle this once more:
- n3xB is an in-development open protocol for creating P2P Bitcoin exchanges & order book on top of the Nostr network. Think n3xB is to Coinbase, as Nostr is to Twitter.
- Fatcrab is a fictional sh!t coin simulating fiat, with a website simulating an online bank. This is created only for the purpose of this demo.
- Fatcrab trade engine is built with Rust on top of the n3xB protocol library to facilitate trading between Fatcrab and testnet/signet Bitcoin.
- OceanSea is an App built with Swift and compiled so far for macOS to provide a demo UX for using the Fatcrab trade engine.

It’s admittedly a lot more work than I expected. I’ve done first draft of the base protocol. And built an example trade layer, along with an iOS app on top for demonstration. Stuck at getting Apple Developer license. It’s close to a full KYC process over there and I don’t want to get doxxed….
Worst case I’ll post about what I worked on so far with a much inferior Mac only version of the demo app. The work can be see on GitHub real time tho.
Ultimately the hope is others build their own intercompatible projects on top of n3xB, or to port existing solutions on top to be intercompatible, instead of me building yet another exchange verticals app besides what’s already out there (Bisq / RoboSat / Mostro etc)

Working on Bitcoin is thankless, profitless work. LARPers going to stack and leech off builders’ time. This incentive misalignment is one of the achilles heel of Bitcoin. Why so few projects around Bitcoin got big.

Haven’t been too active the past bit. But finally completed an entire revamp of the n3xB protocol write-up after various feedback and inspiration from other related projects. I consider this v0.2.
Will build the n3xB order book engine next. And then proceed to build the first trade engine on top, and finally a mobile client. Have not quite decided whether Lightning is better or on-chain is better. On-chain (similar to Bisq) has much lower counterparty risk as a Lightning escrow is a custodial trusted 3rd party (RoboSats/Mostro/CivKit).
Further explanations of the protocol itself, along with example implementation of trade engine and message flow can be all found in the n3xB GitHub repository. Would love to see constructive feedback!

Instead of going ahead and building yet another trade platform around this trade mechanics, I am going to do more protocol specification work in hope of making n3xB a shared language on a common order book between multiple P2P solutions. With the hope of getting Mostro (#[1]) to be the first platform that talks ‘n3xB’. And eventually others that wants to build different solutions, clients, or trade mechanics on n3xB without completely fracturing the network effect and the otherwise thin volumed P2P order book.

Just uploaded to Github a repro demonstrating the usage of a 2 of 2 multisig to lock-up trade and bond amounts atomically funded by both the buyer and the seller. The locked amount can be payed out (more going to the buyer than the seller) by both parties signing (after buyer paid seller fiat, for example). If both parties cannot reach an agreement to unlock the locked up funds, an arbitrator can sweep the funds only after a timeout on a fixed number of blocks. This trade mechanics is basically what Bisq is doing today, except implemented with less on-chain Txs (2, instead of Bisq still using 4). Also, this exercise also demonstrates that this can relatively easily be implemented using Block/Spiral’s Bitcoin Development Kit.

The goal is to have a single protocol for common trade offer discovery - creating deep liquidity pool. The competition should be on trade mechanics and client user experience, not by fragmenting into silo’ed order books. The latter would be more like Mastodon and former more like Nostr itself. We need to be more like Nostr itself.
The time to do it is now and there’s no time to wait, before many platforms get ossified into their own closed ecosystems. United we stand. Divided we fall.

Just shared my super naive playground of using Nostr for some of the offer discovery and trade initiation flows onto Github. The purpose is just to derisk, and not meant to reflect too much on the actual implementation for the initial PoC. Still working on my other playground that tries to construct a multi-sig across multiple BDK powered wallets.

It seems Nostr based P2P marketplace is all the rage these days. And people are viewing it as if these are competing solutions.
My intention has always been to create a single open order-book on Nostr that no one owns. There is literally no money to be made in this. And I’m doing this anon so even repuation and glory upside is highly limited. The only reason to do this is to create ways for on-off/ramp into and out of Bitcoin. My stack gaining purchasing power is more than enough motivation for me.
When I started nobody was talking about this. Now it seems to be all the rage. I am more than happy to drop n3xB completely if someone already got this vision built.
The competition should not be at the protocol/order-book level. The competition should be competing clients, liquidity providers and arbitrators - NOT competing order books and protocols. If it’s the latter then we already have it in the form of Bisq and RoboSats, and would be zero reason to put this on Nostr. The only reason to put this on Nostr is to have an inter-operable, highly liquidity order-book, instead of having wall gardened orderbooks, albeit P2P, etc that we already got today.
If anybody is building ‘competing protocols’ that is also meant to be an interoperable order-book, we should talk. One of us should drop. I’m more than happy not building protocols and build mobile clients and UX instead. DM me.

To be the downer that I usually am, really hoping we have more self-custody Zap supported LN solutions before we jump up and down on how much more Zap capabilities we are adding to Nostr.
Last I tried, it’s nearly impossible to have Zap possible even if one runs a Rasp based LN node. There isn’t even a low effort solution if one runs their own VPS (which is centralized enough as its cloud based).
Basically 90%+ of LN doing Zaps are just one custodial solution to another, mostly Wallet of Satoshi.
Its not good and we don’t need more incentives for fully custodial LN adoption.
Nostr and Wallet of Satoshi amongst others needs to stop this non-sense. Take a look at Bluewallet as a role model. Have a roadmap towards shutting custodial Ligthtning down.

I want to take everything above back. Whats generated by GPT-4 is actually pretty rubbish. It gave me some ideas. But most of it is wrong. It basically just made up non-existing functions and modules. Partly because BDK interfaces have changed drastically since GPT-4 trained its data set. Partly because lying confidently is what GPTs does all the time.

Coded with GPT-4 and asked it to do PSBT with BDK in Rust. Its not perfect. But I ask it to fix things I see incorrect and it understood context and keep digging more into the BDK doc for solutions on its own. Mind is blown.
For example at first it called a method that didn’t exist. I told it that and it fixed it. Then I asked it I want the input amount and output amount to be different since it’s ‘partial’. It done that by just looping through UTXOs in the wallet until it reaches the desired input amount.
I asked if there’s something in the BDK that helps with coin selection. And it found the CoinSelection trait and updated the code to use ‘BranchAndBound’
I still haven’t tried to run it yet. But even if I treat this a pseudo code it’d still be amazing

What prevents relays to generate push? None that I am aware of? The push might be centralized, but doesn’t require centralizing Nostr itself to achieve push.

I have said it numerous times. The way Zap was deployed might as well have been an attack on Bitcoin.
Blue wallet took their custodial solution down. Shame on #[2] to keep their’s up.
There are plenty of non-custodial LN solutions that doesn’t require running a node. There’s zero need for a custodial solution. Zaps be damned.

Why we need to make No-KYC coins the standard. This is the same concept as the anonymotity set - the No-KYC set. If every purchase and every transactions are No-KYC, AML will become impractical to conduct.

I highly doubt Block is able to build a Bisq like No-KYC Bitcoin ramp, for example.
