I think integrating zaps into client workflow has done nothing but diminish Nostr. No other social network has a tipping mechanism attached to posts. You're putting a button in full view that most users will never press. And even if they are the beneficiary, getting a 10 cent zap is basely psychologically insulting to any normal person. It's like throwing pennies in a person's face.
It's quite obvious that zaps are so prominently featured because beneficiaries of Bitcoin Core's largesse want to create more bullet points to talk about when justifying the disaster that is lightning. I've seen multiple people (who have very little understanding of Lightning as a protocol) talk about the incredible Lightning micro-economy of zaps on Nostr.

Yes, there's a psychological feedback loop from candidates that express an anti-Semitic position, in that people who are enthusiastic about anti-Semitism start fawning over them and grooming them. Legislators should not make Israel the centerpiece of their campaign personas. It is poison to Republican primaries. Because everyone can at least guess that when you are introducing anti-Israel legislation that will never pass, you are not legislating about the issues that matter to them. You are wasting your very limited legislative bandwidth on issues that do not improve the lives of voters. People want to see their legislators working on crime and jobs. A dollar is guaranteed legal tender at every bank, every exchange, every place you can go with it. Exchange accounts are frozen and funds are seized based on Bitcoin ledger history all the time. Retailers will also freeze Bitcoin coming from tainted sources. The fact that there is a concept of “tainted coins” means that Bitcoin is not fungible. Just because something may be used equivalently *in one place*, *in one manner* does not mean it is fungible. Fungibility requires it be able to be spent everywhere with the same level of assurance, in the real world, not on the blockchain. You don’t know what the word fungible means.

Silent Payments offers me no assertion of fungibility. It is marginally better than not having it, but it is still too little too late, and missing the core issue: a basic property of money has never been privacy. It’s always been fungibility. Privacy is probably (but not certainly) a side effect of actual fungible currency. You can always spend or exchange a dollar freely. But that doesn’t hold true for Bitcoin, and Silent Payments does not address that.

Core already operates as dictatorship by fiat. Whatever features they have decided upon get implemented, even if the community at large is against them. There’s no fork, Core has always got its way. If they say Bitcoin is on a path to implementing ring signatures, followed by full-chain membership proofs with spend authorization and linkability, we’re getting fungibility and privacy.
Monero supply transparency is completely auditable and cryptographically provable. You misunderstand the technology, like many. Fungibility is a requirement for sound money! The dollar has fungibility legally enforced, there is a law that says it is guaranteed to be usable tender, even if you unknowingly received a stolen dollar or a dollar used in a drug transaction! Well, firstly, only Sterlingov has the claim that he was innocently running a neutral bit of software. He didn’t run around explcitly saying in their business materials that a potential market was listed terror organizations like Samourai did. So the level of professionalism is much higher, and he can legitimately say that he made a neutral privacy tool with no plan to profit from illegal money laundering.
Furthermore, because he actually intended to fight the case from the beginning, he attacked the circuit split on the government’s unconstitutional “infinite jurisdiction for the Internet” argument made by the federal government from the outset. Several other useful arguments were preserved by his highly competent counsel in the motions, which allow for a worthwhile appeal. Keonne and Bill literally made zero effort. Simple plea. They never showed that they intended to fight the case. They never hired any of the dozen significant people who do appeals work for computer crime starting from trial — attorneys that are willing to low bono cases out of passion for the statutes in question, certainly not requiring millions of dollars in funds to do so. They *so obviously* were just planning to take the money and run.
Sterlingov showed up to legitimately fight for us. Keonne and Bill showed up to grift shekels.

When I was falsely charged with computer crimes for lawfully accessing a public API on a webserver, I received around $14,000 in community help to bridge the gap. I went to trial and went to prison, and then won on appeal and established precedent that helps everyone on the Internet. My reward for this was to be blacklisted from banks in exchanges within a couple months of my release in 2014, to be further impoverished (I’d already been bankrupted by 13 years of harassment by the federal government) and to be exiled from the country by continuous direct harassment from federal agents.
Keonne and Bill raised millions of dollars under the direct claim that everyone’s rights were under assault and they were going to fight at trial. They knew this was a lie at the time. They had no plan to fight at trial, and they just wanted a payout. They got more than any computer crimes defendant in history, for doing absolutely nothing for the community, *not even showing up*. In the meantime, Roman Sterlingov went to trial, received an absolutely monstrous sentence, and is actually fighting an appeal on a case that has a lot of hope for actually scoring points against the law (much more than Keonne and Bill). He got virtually no support.
I am generally sympathetic to prisoners, but Keonne and Bill rugpulled the whole community on the way out. They defrauded everybody. They received a gigantic multiple of what it takes to fight a federal criminal case and then *didn’t even spend it on legal defense*. In doing so they not only stole from everyone, but far more unforgivably, they soaked up the resources that were necessary to finance the cases that would actually decide the law. For this, Fuck Samourai. I don’t support their imprisonment, but they are liars, cheats, and cowards. There are other prisoners that deserve care and support more than them.

Lightning addresses are unacceptably dependent upon centralized identity tokens (domain names) that have a history of heavy censorship by courts, activist NGOs, governments, registrars and registries. I'm going to defend myself at this point, in that is a perfectly fine paragraph size, and actually quite small, if you consider the historical style standards of the English language. Henry Fielding’s The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749) contains single paragraphs that are four times that long. Check out the last and unfinished paragraph on this page of *Joseph Andrews* — that’s a big chungus. I really think people should write like the classics. Longer paragraphs, more passive voice. More periodic and complex sentences, often diluting the subject, verb, object pattern to which we are so accustomed. Frankly English now just sounds like trash. It used to be such a lark, meandering through a rococo smattering of words that painted such a wondrous scene of prose upon the vellum.

At this point you have to start asking — who the hell are Primal’s investors? Who is really calling the shots? Who is on its board?
Max Webster of Hivemind Ventures, for example, comes basically out of nowhere. He had an international solar energy (potentially a literal glownigger) company funded by Max Levchin, which just inches very closely to the surveillance economy and Peter Thiel’s Palantir. Then he was at Version One, a VC firm which was run by an a16z board member.
I’m not trying to personalize this, but I’ve never seen anything so ridiculously shilled on Nostr as this “Primal is decentralized” narrative. It makes no sense that it is pushed so aggressively and defended so hard. Do so many random small accounts have that much brand loyalty to one of many Nostr clients? Why wouldn’t they want it to be more, not less decentralized? Why would they be demanding that Primal be able to censor people. It makes way more sense that this is a paid PR strategy.

You can tell Primal is some sort of intelligence operation because you just get people coming out in droves insisting that what they are doing isn’t centralization or censorship. If you liked Primal, why wouldn’t you encourage them to add support for external relays? The app doesn’t have to change much. It can still use their caching server for faster loading, while also simultaneously following relay hints in nevents and subscribing to additional relays like every other Nostr client. If Primal were not trying to undermine and centralize Nostr, why wouldn’t they happily take this feedback and do some refactoring to include normal Nostr protocol relays that are not theirs?

You don’t understand that Primal is already curating its algorithmic feed. That’s a form of editorialization and censorship. You aren’t checking the entire Nostr social graph — you are only checking specific posts. Even a tiny smidgeon of statistical bias can completely change the social graph.
Normal people are not using 4 Nostr clients, and you are only checking for *your* posts. This means you would only notice censorship both if it were happening to you and only if Primal censored the posts to the author as well. Obviously, that’s never how it works. Shadowbanning is the absolute inverse. You don’t get any notification that you’re banned, but your reach is limited beyond the capacity of a normal person to demonstrate how, and sometimes isn’t even noticed by the author.

This is a ridiculous claim -- “you haven’t been censored yet, so there’s no censorship or shadowbanning happening at all!” It’s either so egregiously fallacious that you lack the logical capacity to have this discussion, or it is manipulatively dishonest.
People dunk on Primal because they are positioning themselves as a future censor. If they kept their caching server for “experience” but then also connected to multiple relays they don’t control, then it would be reasonably decentralized like any other Nostr client. But they have explicitly made themselves the sole arbiter of what people see on Primal, and have a track record of algorithmic censorship. Regardless of whether they *choose* to censor or not, if Nostr gains traction courts and governments will make that choice for them, and they will not be allowed to say no.

“It is open source and you can run your own” does not make it not censorious — Mastodon is open source and you can run your own, and it is a hotbed of censorship. “Just run your own social media service!” is the exact echo of the most censorious people on earth. Most clients outside Primal have multiple relays by default, most or all of which they do not control. This includes Amethyst, Damus, Wisp, etc. If chooses Damus to block me on their relay, most people are still going to see my content because I am publishing to the other relays. Also most people can, via the relay hints provided by nevents when you quote a post, fetch my content from relays I post to even if you do not directly follow me or subscribe to my relay. If Primus blocks me from their caching server’s algorithmic feed, then I am silently erased and you will never see my content again. The only way this is different from Twitter is because people can take their nsecs elsewhere, but they provide no notice to users or opportunity for transparency as to what content they have removed. It is not just “caching the content from the relay” btw, it is selecting who gets seen at all in an editorialized fashion. And they have been caught not only censoring likes, but censoring entirely the display of basic post content in their algorithmic relay feed.

When I was a kid there was a DRAM price fixing scandal that was finally prosecuted around 2002. Companies were fined hundreds of millions of dollars for the egregious consumer harm of colluding to round up the prices of RAM to the nearest ten. Absolutely, that is bad behavior that deserves to be punished by society. But it in no way compares to Sam Altman buying up 40% of the supply of RAM to make your competitors all simultaneously get fucked on capex. It literally tacked hundreds of fucking dollars onto ram prices and, more importantly, is keeping actual fucking products I planned to buy out of my hands. It is the single most anticompetitive action that has potentially ever been done by any company in history, going so far as to not only harm consumers but gigantic swaths of market activity that simply are not happening because the RAM is too damn high. I know the DOJ and FTC are going to sit around and not do shit about this. Sam Altman, I wonder what his religious background is.

Suno is the most incredibly polished AI product out there. You can churn out high quality parody mashups to mock people online that sound like they were churned out of a professional recording studio. It’s psychologically devastating for these people to have catchy songs dismantling them and outlining their romantic failures. This kind of bespoke polemic is timeless because these songs end up in my normal day to day music playlist forever. Sometimes guests inquire about the bands and I get to have a funny story about how it was a song made up to mock somebody online.

probably a little buggy. I don’t know. It’s possible your client doesn’t really verify whether the likes are successfully submitted to the relays. I know mine shows the like instantly, whereas a post has a subtle delay on it before it shows that it has been submitted to relays.

Nostr is most suited towards this kind of category opt-in moderation specifically because the list operator can saved the post, with cryptographic signatures, that got a specific user put on the list. Everyone can see with complete transparency that the list is not arbitrarily putting people on the list. They will be able to independently and completely transparently verify that the list is maintained honestly and accurately. The best way to operate this would be via DNSBLs though, not anything shared or mergeable. People that want to subscribe can use a DNSBL.
Web of Trust is already being gamed by political activists to censor people to some degree on Nostr. You don’t get any information on why you are blocked, and there is no way to appeal if you are wrongly blocked.

If they do it persistently, we have perfectly sane harassment laws that specifically say that repeated unwanted contact is a crime. You have the right to block me and never see anything I post again. Before the Internet this was not the case. In Marsh v. Alabama, it was ruled (in line with all previous precedent) that privately owned roadways and sidewalks had to allow religious pamphleters, even though it is private property. The court asserted that anywhere that is the forum for public discussion is de facto allowed for political and religious speech regardless of property rights. In the very early days of the Internet things changed, when people tried to assert First Amendment claims on Compuserve chats. Compuserve claimed they weren't the public square, that they were a private service. I think they were correct, in that Compuserve was a very marginal private space and couldn't possibly have been "the public square". But precedent over this tiny service were eventually laundered into much larger and more critical bits of social infrastructure.
In contrast to Compuserve, Twitter and Facebook are definitely the public square. You cannot petition for a redress of grievances or lobby for policy changes without using them. And the political left delights in suppressing their opponents on them but files lawsuits claiming their rights are infringed when they aren't given access to every inch -- such as when they sued Trump for blocking them on his Twitter account:

I have complete contempt for most of the social media projects that have, for example, claimed decentralization but only offered federation. How much do you spend running the Damus relay every month? Is it a burdensome expense? Does it really cost millions to run one of the largest network nodes?
Also a huge privacy concern is a total lack of message expiry. Combined with the lack of perfect forward secrecy, it’s an extreme hazard. There should be a standard default expiry time on DMs and then nodes don’t have to store them indefinitely.

well it sounds like priority should be shifted to making the network more self-sustainable without the interference of grants. There’s a number of ways to expand the protocol to do this.
Firstly, clients should implement onion support and have the first announced relays be locally-spawned Tor onions. For a great example of this in the field, look at Ricochet Refresh or Cwtch.im — it spawns a local hidden service to receive messages at. This would reduce requests to public relays, by allowing my followers to query relays running on my machine first, which generally stays online.
Secondly, media should be served off of a DHT, Bittorrent or IPFS with a social pinning model. My followers should be making my most recent images and videos more highly available, up to a reasonable quota. Requests to things like blossom et al should be failover only, if nobody is in a DHT.
Finally, DHT can also be used for relay discovery and pubsub. I should be able to announce my relays via DHT as well, and push notifications and my content as a side channel.
These measures not only would make the network cheaper to run, but would also enhance decentralization and make it far more censorship resistant. Win-win for everybody.

I can agree with this to a certain extent. Monero’s team actually accomplished this incredibly with Tari with “merge mining”, where the proof of work of Monero can be used with Tari with no extra computation necessary. Just submit the same block proof to both blockchains.
There are definitely creative ways we’ve seen that allow for Bitcoin to not lose its value proposition of cornerstone ledger with maximum proof of work. But Bitcoin itself definitely has to be one blockchain, because that’s the definition made in the paper. Chain with longest proof of work, fixed and capped supply of 21M. You can’t have Bitcoin be more than one ledger and preserve that. But Bitcoin’s proof of work could be what secures many additional blockchains.

I disagree completely! Lightning has better privacy guarantees than Bitcoin. Binance in Japan does not allow Lightning deposits because it violates the AML framework there, just like Monero! It’s not as good privacy as Monero, of course, but it is orders of magnitude better than Bitcoin. And the blocks were hardly “excessively small” — Bitcoin’s fees have always been reasonably market competitive. I just completely and wholeheartedly disagree with your viewpoint here. The block size at the time was reasonable. And Core acknowledged that an increase would also be reasonable. But Hearn was out there saying that the block size should be completely arbitrary with no real limit. This change was extremely experimental and was potentially centralizing by making it excessively expensive in terms of the amount of hard drive space you need to have a full node. And frankly, it is just kooky.
It’s 2026 and there’s more Bitcoin usage than ever and transaction fees are about a dime. The nodes are not excessively small.

Years after being falsely indicted and tortured by the government, if I login to my old Gmail there are subsequent law enforcement requests internationally. I know this for a fact.
I don’t care about being deanonymized. I’m not trying to post anonymously. I want to be able to speak, and hopefully at least provide an opportunity for my friends who I have lost contact with to find me here on Nostr. Tor by default is the best policy possible, and shows basic decency and cognizance for people’s human rights and safety. Relays that block Tor are hurting my ability to even exist as a person.
