Yesterday someone sent me some nuts locked to my npub and I realised that I have no utility to unlock them.
So here is "nutcracker" a simple CLI that lets you store an encrypted nsec and unlock Cashu token with it.
Its written for Bun and TypeScript, but I will include standalone executables with the first release too.
"nutcracker set-key" lets you save a signing key locally. If it is an nsec, it will prompt you to choose a passphrase for encryption. Your key is stored as ncrypt on disk. You can also add an ncrypt directly.
"nutcracker crack <token>" can then be used to open up nuts locked to your npub.

No, the wallet page on npub.cash was always meant to be a demo. It’s not fool-proof and quite error prone. The npub.cash API was always supposed to be complimentary to a full-fleshed wallet. The goal is to have many wallet implement the API and have many people host their own npubcash-server instances. Then it will truly be seamless.

Fast forward four years: I now earn a living by writing code. The demand for developers in the Bitcoin space is huge. Thanks to organizations like OpenSats and the Human Rights Foundation, it’s even possible to make a living building free and open source software.

I think vibe coders are what J. K. Ousterhout describes as “tactical tornadoes” (even though he is referring to them in a different context). Developers who can pump out a feature 0-60 faster than anyone else could. But at the same time they leave a wake of non-maintainable code and bad design behind.
In my experience current AI can not write maintainable, modularised code at scale.

With Cashu you can securely receive payments without an internet connection! 🥜🔏
Here is how it works:
1. The receiver sets up their wallet and chooses a mint (this is done while online). The wallet will download the mint’s key sets and save them locally
2. When the receiver wants to receive a payment (now being offline) the wallet will generate a payment request, specifying the amount, the locking script, and the mint.
3. The sender scans the payment request and constructs the requested token
4. The receiver receives the token. His wallet checks whether the token fulfils the requirements. Then it uses the included DLEQ proofs and the cached key set to verify whether the signature on the token is valid. If it is, the transaction is complete.

By now, you probably know I’m not a big fan of "vibe coding." But before I dive into why, let me clarify: I’m not talking about using AI as a helpful tool to assist with coding. I’m referring to the concept originally described by Andrej, fully giving in to the "vibe," ignoring implementation details, and letting AI take the wheel.
In my view, that approach is mostly useless, if not outright harmful, in many situations. I think most would agree: you can’t build critical systems this way. And you certainly can’t unleash vibe coding on legacy codebases without risking regressions all over the place. Sure, it might work fine for weekend projects (which, to be fair, is exactly the context Andrej was referring to). But those weekend projects are where developers learn the craft. When you "vibe" your way to the finish line, you miss out on a huge part of the learning experience. Software design and implementation is hard and it takes time and repetition to learn. At the same time actual typing will let you master your environment, making you a more productive engineer.
When I bring this up, vibe coders often respond with something like, “Well, mastering AI tools is just as important. If you don’t learn to use them, you’ll fall behind.” Really? Come on. “Mastering” vibe coding tools might take an experienced engineer a day or two. Mastering software engineering (if that’s even possible) takes a lifetime. At the same time vibe bros will constantly tell you that AI is gonna be a completely different thing in 12 months from now, so everyone has to relearn all the tricks anyway.
When I hear that university students are solving their data structures and algorithms homework by just pasting it into ChatGPT, while companies like Amazon are still asking candidates to implement a running median using heaps, it feels like there’s a growing disconnect. And honestly, there’s a bit of delusion on both sides.
I think what I am trying to get at is: Don't let the vibe take away your chance to grow and learn. It is an incredible tool, when used correctly though.

That is a great way of putting it. I use it a lot for research and better “docs”. Sometimes I even let AI validate ideas I had and code I have written.
The essence of my original post was supposed to be that people should not solely depend on it and instead develop understanding and knowledge in the domains that are most crucial to their craft.
Just like I always try to do math in my head before picking up a calculator. Simply because it keeps your mind sharp.

I agree. Using LLMs to automate mundane tasks is a great idea. Using it to create things beyond you personal understanding might not be. You will not be able to sort things out if it breaks. It might contain serious flaws that you wouldn’t even be able to spot.
I know people that are unable to change a tire, install a socket, or fix a weld because these are tasks that are done for them. I feel bad for them

You comparisons are stupidly far off. I get it’s a joke, but it’s important to understand this. LSPs and IDEs are tools. AI CAN be a tool, but people use it as an all in one solution. It’s a nailgun that drives a nail in, after having drawn all the blueprints. I wouldn’t let a nailgun draw my blueprints, and I guess you wouldn’t either

Sneak preview: clipstr - A clipboard manager that lives on nostr!
I recently started transitioning from my Macbook to a Linux machine and the only thing I miss is a synchronised clipboard between my devices. This made working on multiple workstations and with my phone a breez!
Because I missed this so much I started having a clipboard text file that I synced between my devices using SyncThing, but it was not the real deal. Then I realised that I already work with the perfect syncing layer every single day... nostr!
clipstr uses nostr events to your clipboard registry. It can set or get entries and print them to stdout, meaning you can easily pipe them into your OS' native clipboard when desired.
Because it is build on nostr, it is easy to add GUI clients or access the registry through a browser.
I did not get to polish and release it. But I wanted to share a demo regardless. Wdyt?

Coinbase jumped on the 402 bandwagon... yay!
When I talk to people about Cashu they usually ask me: "Why do we need Cashu? We got Bitcoin and Lightning". I used to tell them that Cashu offers a great alternative to custodial Lightning, but with better privacy. While this remains true, my answer today is that Cashu enables new use cases (or simplifies them drastically) where Lightning and Bitcoin struggle.
One example are Zaps. NIP-61 Zaps offer a very similar experience and value proposition as NIP-57 Zaps do, but require only a fraction of the implementation overhead.
The second example (and inspiration for this post) is HTTP 402. With Cashu, we can streamline payments for requested ressources into a single request. Because Cashu is a bearer asset the whole flow is pretty stateless. It is stupid simple to implement this. While it is definitely possible to make 402 work with other "assets", using Bitcoin / Cashu makes it a breez.

You mean if the sender is offline? Yes, offline Cashu transactions always come with some requirements and trade offs.
Receiver offline: sender needs to pick the right token (as defined in the payment request) and include DLEQ
Sender offline: receiver should accept token from all mints and swap to LN to make sure token are real money
Both offline: requires either preparation in advance or a considerable amount of trust

It’s very transparent.
> User requests resource
> Server responds with Cashu payment request (encodes requirements like which mint to use, which pubkey to lock to, amount, etc.)
> user creates matching token and replays the request (this time with token in header)
> server verifies the token and responds with resource
All of this can be automated. If the user does not have a matching token, the wallet will do an automatic mint->mint swap. It’s pretty seamless

I spent a full afternoon trying to pass the absolute root path of my monorepo to all its modules. After getting build steps and docker deploys working, I failed at getting nodemon / dotenv to recognise my root level .env file.
Then I finally found a workaround: $(git rev-parse --show-toplevel)
This returns the absolute path of the repos root directory, no matter where in the tree you currently are. No need to pass the path from root, as each module of the repo can figure it out on its own now

The first thing is the tooling. I switched from npm to yarn, because I felt like it had the better workspace support. But of course this introduces other issues, like adding some stuff to your dockerfile, changing commands, etc.
Then the worst part was making sure that the packages referenced each other in the right way. I have one package "env" that contains a script that will create an .env file for you. But of course this needs to be created in the root directory of the repo, not in the packages dir. Same thing with the webserver that needs to serve the output of another packge.
I ended up adding ROOT_DIR=$(pwd) to all scripts and referenced that env var in each package.

Okay we are getting somewhere! A NIP57 zap to my profile shows up in my Olas wallet pretty much instantly. Of course some of the zaps metadata gets lost, but at least the message stays. I will probably add a pointer to the Zap Receipt event in the NutZaps content field.

Nut-Bridge provides a Lightning Address that forwards all received payments via NutZaps to you. With this you can have a nostr-native Cashu Wallet and still be compatible with Lightning-only clients. I had this idea this morning and hacked together an MVP, so be very careful when testing ;)

Absolutely! Just semantics. I am neither a mathematician nor a cryptographer. From my perspective you have a finite set of values and each of them corresponds to a finite set of other values. By doing the calculation you are “finding” a values pair from the other set.
But this is not very scientifically put haha.

Because I received a coupe of DMs pointing out a bug in this code: in JavaScript “this” is implicitly defined in every function scope. If there is no object attached (function is not a method) it points to the global object (window or globalThis).
There is no bug in this code. ecash fixes it globally.

While Cashu mints do support WebSockets for realtime updates, it turned out that WebSockets are pretty difficult to work with, when you are trying to keep them and the subscriptions alive for long periods (in my case days).
But there is a second issue: You see Cashu mints enfore rather strict rate limits on their users. This is important as Cashu is account-less and preventing spam attacks is difficult. Usually this is no issue, as regular users interacting with a mint do not hit these limits. But npub.cash is a funnel. Instead of every user using their own IP to hit the mint, with npub.cash every user "proxies" through the services server.
Turns out this second issue is much bigger than the first one and WebSockets do not solve this. So I decided to build a scheduler that make sure that all mint communication happens as frequent as possible, but never to frequent. This module also solves the first issue, as it allows to queue polling tasks in a lower priority making sure the service stays up to date about payment activity.
If the server restarts it wont hit the mint with a gazillion subs at once, it will make sure they are evenly spread out through low priority calls, while always making sure there is "rate" left for calls that need to be instant.
I built this module externally, so theoretically I could publish it as npm package for structured and timed mint communication. Please let me know if you could use something like this (because as of right now I don't think most Cashu applications would benefit from this, npub.cash is not your usual Cashu application).
After doing some testing I think it is ready to put into an experimental version of npub.cash. I hope to release this on reckless-npub.cash by the end of the week.

The protocol does not specify that they have to be equal. However because this is not defined, wallets might have a hard time handling it (or users might have a hard time understanding it). Also there is no way for a mint to announce this fee.
