Bitcoin allows us to store, send and measure value but it does NOT help figuring out who to trust.
Think about it: yes you can accept sats in exchange for your services and products almost trustlessly with bitcoin, but what about the other party?
When I buy anything, I need to put trust in my counterparty to give me what he promised because it is very hard to recover from a deal or trade gone wrong. We need to focus on prevention of conflicts which is more trust between parties beforehand.
This kind of trust comes from people, not money. And I prefer to put my trust in people I know in the first place, and then widen the circle of trust further to degrees of separation.
Nostr turbocharges this trust because we are bootstrapping communities and markets where all communication is signed and standardized.
Communities bootstrap markets which in turn feed more flourishing in communities in a virtuous cycle (quite similar to how bitcoin is monetizing).
Bitcoin is the most trustless.
Nostr can become the most _trusted_ .

Bitcoin's culture relies on thorough arguments based on technology and economic incentives.
Arbitrary narratives based on fairy tales and optics has never lasted too long.
Let's get something straight:
- Demand for arbitrary data on the blockchain will NOT exceed demand for monetary transactions in the long run. Shitcoiners will definitely be outpriced. Why are you in bitcoin in the first place if you cannot believe that?
- Op_return filters create worse incentives economically (more non-standard, centralized transaction transmission, further mining centralization) and technologically (dumping garbage data in worse places than the trash cans, i.e. longer verification: slower IBD, more orphaned blocks)
Virtue signaling will not save you from reality.
The hard part is actually **getting rid of the emotional fluff and think hard on the best approach with nuance.**
The good part is that whoever is wrong will probably be obvious, since many will indeed run core v30, and we've gathered decent amount of data from the filtered days of course. Moreover, the op_return debate has no fatal impact on bitcoin. I can see some doomsday pessimism telling us otherwise, but this kind of alarmism is similar to a childish Malthusian prophecy to me.
I have seen some good technical and economical arguments on the Knots side as well, which I disagree with but soon the rubber will meet the road and in a few years we'll see.

Or why not just deploy it for yourself via Shakespeare?
- People want features they care for, but the owner of the project probably has his own roadmap for a good reason
- Vibe coded stuff probably needs more work and reviews to actually fit in the project and make the code future proof. Lots of vibecoded PRs will inundate projects with half-baked code
- If mostly only you want that change then it is normal that you bear the cost of deployment and since it's nostr you will not lose connection with others running a different version of the app, with your own quirks
- I know you are working on a simple deployment pipeline, you can make money on hosting here, why not make use of this?

I have a very strong conviction that Nostr cannot be captured by big tech at this point.
They can just ignore it.
Unless...
Let's start at the beginning: Nostr's simple design makes small room for attacks on Nostr itself: closed source software, lack of event verification, proprietary APIs rather than querying relays directly, no relay selection in clients... these type of things are trivial to spot.
I also firmly believe that event kinds will in time consolidate and ossify, it's a strong incentive for players in the same industry/area.
Decentralized relay management will get stronger too, as best practices form. We have relay selection on the user level with sane fallbacks/defaults as a starting point. Things will be fine on this front as well I think.
**The biggest threat right now is not doing the hard work to implement quality software with viable business models supporting the projects.**
Big tech has hordes of fiat code monkeys to deliver convenience. They don't have anything else than that though. They cannot do what freedom tech enables.
What is your edge?
Delivering freedom in a way people can receive it: build it up from sane default options gradually towards sovereignty. You can start with convenience but surface the options with care in due time.
This seems to be harder to do than the walled garden model, but actually pays off long-term handsomely: your users will be more educated and thank you for it because you were there when they were in the dark, when they needed you most. They will become your apostles, and network effect might build up.
For people who are afraid of "doing nostr in the wrong way" or "cannot find the exact way to do xyz", consider this:
No client app is profitable yet. Take everything with a grain of salt other than basic OS principles, freedom tech values and NIP01, which are crystal clear.
Use the OS code: look at it, play with it, fork it, think about it. There's no real substitute for that. You can read a million pages of spec, vibe code for ever to fake it till you fail, or go get your hands dirty and master it in no time. Yes, it takes more effort to do, than to consume. Demonstrate Proof of Work.
**Don't let fear guide your decisions! Build in a permissionless way, on a permissionless protocol.**
If you get dragged down arguing on NIPxyz on github or anywhere else rather than building for your target audience, you lose.
You lose because you are relying on futile reassurence instead of passion to deliver value. To ship the future.
Don't ever let them steer your ship.
The only thing you should be afraid of is opportunity cost of the precious time that distracts you from building.
If only a handful of people do this, we will win. Those who read this far might be the ones.
Go _build_ the future you want to see in the world.

I agree low time-preference optimism for the world is healthier than prophecies of doom.
Since you are Christian here's a question: many early Christians including Paul seemed to have expected the end of the world in their lifetimes.
They warned each other about the imminent return of Christ and how they need to lead a *moral* life since the judgement can come any time.
This seems to contradict your article, and suggests that high time-preference fear of judgement (or excitement for heaven? I don't know) can instill better morals too.

Emphasis on **also**. You still are providing examples, not authoritative definition because if we could code sth like this exactly, we would already have done it and made it consensus.

I agree. That is why there are protections in bitcoin against many types of attacks against real DoS vectors. Op_returns don't present such a threat.
If they did, miners did not have an incentive to mine them because their nodes would crash and mining operations would be disrupted.
They are valid transactions you (and I for the matter) don't agree with but the economical incentive says it is profitable to mine them, and it causes a less far-reaching impact than doing such things in other ways. A filter that disrupts economic activity and has worse impacts than dropping it, is harmful overall.
Users can make whimsical choices and think they will virtue signal with filters but I estimate this is not going to be enough when facing economic reality, especially in the long run.

Spam is subject to semantics. If it was not, we would still have decentralized email, because relays could have easily determined unsolicited or otherwise unwanted data, and more providers would exist, not a fiat reputation system of a handful of players applying arbitrary filters, banning mostly anyone from the system that is not in the oligopoly.
If we cannot create an algorithm that gets rid of 100% spam for everyone, than we simply don't know what spam is for everyone.
We have to draw an arbitrary line to not expose ourselves to malicious attacks though, and the most neutral way to do that is using money i.e. economic incentives. It is the most objective tool of valuation that humans have.
**Valuation** determines spam, which is subjective but money makes it less so, with global consensus enforced by cryptography.
That's why we must not give in to our urge to censor people we fervently disagree with. To do that would lead back to authoritarian regimes. Doing so serves our low time-preference brain rather than whimsical action.
Using bitcoin with the most adherence to reality is dropping this arbitrary limit standing in the way of economic incentives, in my opinion.
I could be wrong bit that is where I am right now.

What about the consequences of slower verification of blocks for the whole network of nodes, due to Knots nodes not being able to start validation because they dismissed economically relevant valid transactions?
Longer validation can cause competing blocks more likely.
The fee estimatiom problem is also a well-known predictable effect of purging mempools this way.
Yet another serious issue is to burden all nodes with substantially more validation _for ever_ with inscriptions in pubkeys. In contrast, op_return can be ignored in validation.
I think these side effects dwarf your concerns about temporary RAM benefits.
In addition, the CSAM arguments have existed for long as well and, though not a lawyer and all, but Knots nodes will store these as well and relay them as valid blocks to other nodes, so there is no benefit I see here either.
I am almost sure you knew these arguments already. Failing to steelman the other side is a mistake. Do you want to get closer to truth or justify an outcome?
The only "moral" of bitcoin is economic incentives, strictly speaking.
People will argue on subjective morals and semantics for ever. What we strive to achieve with money is as close to objectiveness as possible though.
Wishful thinking with ignorance towards reality caused the fiat system in the first place.
Camouflaging this with morality and a veneer of certainty instead of focusing on error-correction is just an appeal to authority and a path leading back to a fiat.

I don't know how you conclude you touched a nerve but as you might have noticed I argued against your points, not you personally.
No hard feelings man, I just think you are wrong, at least based on what I read.
If I got you right, in your world we need an overarching framework with guidelines as to how we extend nostr.
In mine we don't. We will still definitely have a lot of well-constructed explanatory docs about design, just not standardized by anyone.
People still have the incentive to get contributors into projects just they don't have the bureaucratic process of NIPs, and a "guiding body of experts" that are appointed to cast judgement on how people write their software.
You can create such a thing, it's just that I doubt any serious player needs that when we have each others npubs.
Or maybe some people will find value in that. More power to them.

By development I mean the design, discussion and implementation of Nostr protocol extensions in software that speaks Nostr.
I say we don't need more governance and you say we do. Did I misunderstand something?
I reacted on your Bitcoin claims because those were better for your arguments. I think Python and Rust made your case even weaker. Do you really want to introduce a "Nostr Steering Council" (Python) ? Or do you think the Rust Foundation provides a good model for governance of Nostr? Development processes of these are permissioned by their respective authorities.

If you ask me, OAuth, DNS and SMTP centralized because of Conway's law and not because people should have put more guards to safekeep their precious protocol. Design and implementation happened under the control of big corporations and/or governments, which already were centralized and burdened with bureaucracy.
Vote with software, not documents on governance is my argument in a nutshell.
Nostr was not designed by ignorant bureaucrats so I don't see the future your prophesies predict.
I might be wrong about what you want to do, go for it and we'll see.

I believe you had good intentions writing this, but ultimately mostly have to disagree with the blanket statement to formalize nostr delopment.
A few points:
1. Bitcoin and Lightning both are much narrowly scoped protocols compared to Nostr. Therefore easier to standardize and consesus MUST be achieved because there must be one money.
Nostr is not like this. It allows for much more flexibility because people still are discovering what nostr is fundamentally. Anyway plenty of people still don't think BIPs and others are good ways to do this. An example: BIP39 which is used by all onchain wallets basically in use today, is UNANIMOUSLY DISCOURAGED for implementation. Funny huh?
2. Nostr and all protocols will be what people with SKIN IN THE GAME want it to be. It's not just about money. It's about creating useful stuff people want. That takes time, taste and caring. But we have to accept reality: bitcoin has not centralized too much yet, because there were serious actors all over the globe to fight for it. I mean not in comment sections and twitter threads but with projects where they poured their hearts and money into it.
If Nostr gets co-opted by the sorts of Google then we failed to outcompete them, and it's so simple. I really don't think that "If only more RFCs had been posted about governance and stuff like that we would have a decentralized oauth." No. The more economic clout wins. No amount of bureaucracy changes that.
3. Capture cannot be solved by centralizing efforts in a generic way. This is an oxymoron.
However, running mates rowing in the same boat will indeed try to join their efforts. Look at the de-commerce consortium of @nprofile…c8sd , @nprofile…6xyx with Conduit, Plebeian market and others. They have already done what you described, just with bottom up effort, not in a communist top down way.
4. If I want feedback on anything I can ask people I trust, not some self-designated team of experts, and potentially pay for review efforts. No need for pundits shouting from the sidelines.
5. I don't care if the process takes long to form good specs. Centralization doesn't help to speed this up. We have several websites describing most NIPs and people who mostly respond to questions. Communities could help further. Why do we need to formalize grassroots development? What we would get is more corruption as to who merges which NIP into "tHe NIPs rEPo". Probably why @nprofile…xuyp dropped this idea in the first place.
Still, I don't really care what kind of process you guys are up to because this is not strict consensus stuff like money has to be. Go for it, just don't think people's precious time will be wasted on centralized Nostr politics rather than building.

I understand we are early and patience pays off.
I don't like the framing of "low-chance for businesses and protocols to succeed" though, because it doesn't help.
Would you say this to your kid:
- "For any creative endeavor you try, you probably won't make a penny out of it because 99.999% of projects fail or never mature into a product you can sell. But you should try nonetheless, everything's gonna be alright, keep it up kiddo! "

Nostr seems like the best solution to digital identity, what else do we need to try?

Narratives give meaning to our lives and we love to share them and form communities around them. The sharing is a core part of our identity. Why are we posting on nostr at all if group interactions are mostly a struggle to free ourselves from deceit?
At the same time, no two persons have exactly the same narrative. And I think that is alright. Just need to realize that, and what you get is not a story of manipulation but mere incentives of universal creatures each with their own unique reality to contribute.

Zapstore is already protecting users from simple sybil scams which is the most problematic with any freedom tech app accessing delicate information.
Censorship would be evident, apps are not like shitposts that just vanish in the ether, creators care about them and make a ruckus if they cannot publish, and users notice very fast thanks to nostr.
Even more so if there is a person with a decent follow-base trying to scam ppl publishing a "malicious app" on behalf of someone else. Cmon man, that's very unlikely even if they hate each other, there is an incentive not to wreck your entire reputation on this.
Anyway, relay management is a good addition and enables extra verification, but I understand it was not the primary feature, and we always knew it was coming because it was built in the open all along.

Yeah it's similar but nostr doesn't gossip a whole bunch of keys so it's usable, no sync issues.

The first paragraph of this is so true.
Non-dev people or ppl who haven't tried to bring a nostr app to MVP level don't understand how complex it could get to deal with async signing and encryption.
E.g. you have an ecash wallet that synchronizes state (encrypted tokens) to relays as a backup and publishes nutzaps(signing). Now consider ALL possible footguns when new #ecash tokens are minted and #Amber connection gets flaky or lost.

This guy clearly doesn't get at the root of the Github problem. Which is not training AI, or even cutting access: Git is already decentralized to a degree.
Github is valuable for the git **metadata** .
Most importantly discussions around the repos. It is what makes code intelligible. All the wisdom that goes into _why_ that code is written the way it is, that's really important.
That's what nip34 is mostly for.
The point is to bring the authentic identities of nostr to git, setting the metadata free by signing everything relevant.
Nostr is the glue that bridges these open protocols together, like git.
Code is dead without the effective social coordination.

This is how I am for distinguishing web of (minimal) trust from Reputation:
- Web of trust is the basic filter that can tap into multiple sources of trust (e.g. social follows, some sort of bootstrap list, nip51 lists, nip29 member lists) and sources are CONFIGURABLE by the user, with sane defaults.
- Reputation gives meaning to this by scoring people based on reviews and other possible metrics. Reviews are filtered through WoT and can be used to help the user make important decisions e.g. in SatShoot to select the right counterparty for a freelance deal.
The key is to understand your users' needs and use the types of events and UX that will help in whatever problem your app solves.
Generic, globalist views of this matter lead nowhere.

Once you have an onchain address, you can send as much as you want unlike with LN.
The mints would have no control over how much money they are comfortable with handling. Since still a lot of things are experimental in this space and mints have non-negligible risks, this would possibly create an unwanted situation for them.
Refunding is an option but in practice it might be complicated.

I assume yo are talking to a software engineer.
I would follow up with a question to clarify the areas of interests / experience and point the person to one of the open-source projects to get inspired.
The benefit is that most probably the person can view a live version of the app which is cool, and the repo would explain what NIPs, libraries and tools it uses.

On a bitcoin standard people can thrive from the fruits of the radically free market, as long as they demonstrate creativity and proof of work.
I think in the era of AI, the process of obsoleting redundant work is accelerated, which puts those people in the top ranks that strive to learn every day, coupled with strong work ethics and integrity.
As to the early stackers:
It doesn't matter in the long run how much you stacked early. What matters is if you can really see the world through the lens of bitcoin and understood its implications. And it's never too late.
The idea that "those who have plenty will be given even more" seems like a proof of stake idea from this perspective and doesn't make sense in a system based on proof of work.

You don't need an api key (fine-grained access token) to work, only if you have your repo hosted on github only. For reading the repo you don't even need the access token, only if you want to perform push operations.
Otherwise it will work with gitlab, gitea and such, plus of course in due time with grasp servers, bc that uses nostr-based authentication which will be the best user experience with budabit.

Yes that's the idea, basically.
If I want to send ecash as payment for freelancing on [SatShoot](https://satshoot.com) I want to do it with p2pk so it is easy to build Reputation from provable zaps, published to nostr but tied to the recipient pubkey.
The problem is when the zap cannot reach the recipient which could be due to multiple causes but I want to have a safe path for clients to get back the p2pk ecash that was never redeemed by the recipient freelancer.

What about NUT14? Refund path of an HTLC-locked proof is not reverting strictly speaking but a way to spend otherwise promised ecash right?
I'm thinking about using that to undo p2pk zaps if sth happens and recipient doesn't receive and redeem a zap in a week or two.
What do you think?

People still use the term "vibe coded" for any code the LLM wrote which is confusing.
It's not vibe coding to have the LLM write parts of your code, integrating it after careful review. Vibe coding is to not look at the produced code at all, and switching off your engineer brain completely, by blindly adopting anything the AI generates. This is mostly silly, if not done for pure hobbyist purposes.
I can of course imagine scenarios where you only need a minor tweak in an open-source app that you can just blindly get done with AI, but again that's not the heavy-lifting. It's like playing around with Wordpress themes at most.
And I don't need to keep hammering on this point really much, the results speak for themselves.
LLMs are really useful, and it will keep evolving, and we will keep using it in novel ways e.g. MCP.
However, for a piece software to be useful on the margins where ppl choose the best products, AI is going to merely raise expectations on quality.
Now, it might be the case that the verb "Vibing" will make it to common language to mean "I generated this code with an LLM" but this has not been its original meaning.

I learned previously from @nprofile…vmd0 that I can use Neovim with goose and goose.nvim to integrate LLMs in my Neovim IDE.
I did it with OpenRouter but it doesn't accept Lightning in practice (some crapto shitcoinery with awful wallets is possible but no thanks) .
Then I have been casually listening to @nprofile…yne0 with @nprofile…when I learned they have an API that is compatible with goose! Integrated without a hassle with the nice tutorial I found on the site!

Also, I believe that at least in the marketplace usecase like SatShoot, the right way to introduce this feature is as a premium introduction service.
1. In addition to freealance-scoped follows, User has a naive #WoT calculated client-side every couple of hours, and an opt-in WoT from SatShoot's npub that can be switched off but helps in bootstrapping
2. The user will have additional lists of people he trusts e.g. from communities' members-lists or other nip51 lists
3. If this is not enough to introduce the parties, Vertex comes into play, trying to find reputable followers of the party that is analyzed. This is important for marketplace actors, who always try to grab opportunities but want to get rid of potential bad actors as well.
They will pay the fee, and it will be worth their sats.
A successful outcome means the new counterparty can be added to the freelance follows and other lists possibly.
P.S.: A naive 2-step wot with follows, mutes and reports is like 10-20 seconds to produce rather than minutes, it's more about the limit of reach than anything else.

There should no 1 leaderboard.
Payments to centralized parties don't solve this problem either. It just reinvents existing enshittified apps.
Web of trust should filter out untrusted pubkeys for users, so everyone sees their own subjective leaderboard.
This is one of the most profound paradigms only nostr enables.

Slowly but surely nostr will take the wind out of their sails, to the degree people want more control, more optionality and customization.
Getting rid of a continuously breaking proprietary api in favor of a protocol with sovereign identities seems like a better way. The walled gardens are not easy to leave though. Will take time.
For now, we're getting close to a nice feature set that covers plenty of use-cases. I almost never open github these days.
Keep building momentum.

My estimation is that the norm will eventually be to hide absolutely everything outside of the web of trust by default, and show only optionally.
As a minimum posts should be ordered by wot.
Also, kind3 follows and 10k mutes are just the beginning. Communities will offer more reliable starting points.
Other nip51 stuff is also useful.
Context is key, and the general kind1 client use-case makes it hard to find that specific context where wot can be fine-tuned to user needs.

Marketplaces thrive on liquidity and trust. The two seem to go against each other on the surface.
The more liquidity the more people, the more bad actors, the harder to maintain trust in general.
The safer you want it to be, the more trust you need between parties, the less people you can allow, which comes with reduced liquidity, unless everyone is trusting one entity which comes with its own downfall when those become parasitic middle-men.
Nostr is the solution to this problem. The more apps you are using, the more connections you can examine, the easier it is to introduce parties.
A high level of Liquidity can be achieved while trust is not eroded in the market.

Spam protection on relays needs go hand in hand with some kind of protection on the client-side BY DEFAULT, with carefully crafted UX to empower users, not patronize them.
More decentralized = more open = smarter filtering necessary.

The problem is that the user doesn't know the trust tradeoffs of the app.
If it's about money you can easily degrade trust if user assumes things that turn out to be different.
Look at test.satshoot.com for an example flow. It could improve a lot but it's sth.
You could create a new account, go to wallet and deposit a minimal amount. Then withdraw.
Or you can test payments too. Follow that new npub with your account inside satshoot to appear in your freelance WoT and create a test Job, place bid, accept, close and pay with ecash.
It is being reworked somewhat but gets you an idea

So either #Amethyst must be aggressively picking up every single reply regardless of #WoT or relay settings, OR the relay cannot really filter spam. Or, I am just doing sth wrong, of course.

I'm all in on Freelance!
https://satshoot.com is going to become the tool to bootstrap a freedom economy on nostr built on LN and Cashu.
The juicy stuff on nostr is just getting started.
I think the problem to bootstrap a valuable marketplace built on bitcoin has been the lack of focus on freelancing. People wanting to earn in bitcoin will drive their clients towards nostr, the only way to effectively build your business without middle men to take a forced cut (LinkedIn, Upwork, Fiverr etc) and controlling who you can connect to.
That's why the next version will feature Job boards as well as Services posted by freelancers. Clients post Jobs and order freelance Services, while freelancers post Services and bid on Jobs. Both will be available.
Nostr as a global Reputation network of pubkeys gets you the best opportunities to find work or get the best freelancers. Simple as that.
