Gold is used as a financial instrument and most of its value come from that.
It would be same with Bitcoin, as long as it was perceived as money by normal people. The moneyness of Bitcoin would form the core of its value on top of which other types of demand would be stacked.
With Gold I believe it has a fundamental demand for jewelry and other small use cases, and on top of that there is a vast amount of financial use cases that make its value be much bigger than that of other rocks.
In both cases if you remove the fundamental source of value the thing tends to zero.

This only proves that network effect is basically all that matters, so you can't say that email is undefeated because it is technically superior or better designed or anything like that.
You can still sing the praises of email for having network effect, but I don't see the point of cheering for a fact of nature. It's like claiming that elephants are the biggest animals, and shaming all the other animals for not being big enough.

Instead of polluting all the events with a "client" tag can you guys please agree on publishing a kind:1729 event (I just made that number up) with the client name in it every day or every week or who knows?

This is expected, just like programmers tend to write software for other programmers, people from cinema often make movies about the process of making movies or acting, writers write books about writing.
But in the case of Bitcoiners for some reason it seems to be much worse.
Look at how many wallets exist, or services that allow you to visualize Bitcoin things, lend Bitcoin, exchanges in all their shapes, what else?

From a quick glance at the code you have a set of hardcoded relays that the app uses at all times and at no point you try to fetch outbox relays of users or their list of DM relays.
There is another "pool" that the app maintains with other relays. I don't know where those come from, but apparently you blast every DM to all these relays too?

Stuff you publish to your homeserver doesn't have to be signed, so your key doesn't have to be hot.
If one wants to verify if you really said something they have to connect to your homeserver and ask.
This supposedly means that you can do access-control better, since there is no way to distribute your content beyond your home server.
Also because they don't do signatures they don't need a canonical event format, so the content that comes from the homeserver can be of any shape. They like the concept of serving arbitrary files.
Nostr keys can't publish to the BitTorrent DHT, because they use a different signature algorithm.

I think Nostr would be probably 200% better if we had someone to test apps reliably.
I'm not talking about a "QA engineer" whatever, just someone that isn't a programmer but can install things, click buttons and report bugs.
I have the impression that this is a role that died in the industry of software development, but it is much needed now, and much more in the age of AI code.

On Jumble they were working pretty well two weeks ago, now they're empty, I have zero chats. I don't know why. Maybe because Coop has refreshed my encryption key. Maybe NIP-4E is too complicated and we have to simplify it.
Coop used to work pretty well for a while but a little before the NIP-4E transition started it got pretty broken and hasn't recovered yet. I'm waiting for @npub1zfs…w445 to finish his mobile app and fix it. Still hopeful.

https://nospeak.chat/ is the first NIP-17 chat app that I saw that works very reliably since https://wisp.mobile/. It is amazing, if you don't have a problem with pasting your nsec you should definitely try it. By the way, two people can chat one using Wisp and the other Nospeak. Mindblowing!, a slap in the face of everybody who said Nostr DMs would never work
As @npub1der…xzpc said recently: "if you know what you're doing NIP-17 works really well".
(I also don't know who makes it, so don't trust it with your nsec!)

I've seen a video here some weeks ago and now I can't find it.
It was a dramatic voice reading something like a big tweet, the phrases were being shown as they were read. The entire tweet was a list of complaints about the current state of the internet, how annoying is to make logins on websites, do phone verification, KYC, and then everything is full of spam and so on.
I think it was an old video that someone reposted, something like that.

In a brief look I couldn't understand how they're doing paywalled content, I also don't know who is behind that site, but I wish they considered https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/2156 and provided their feedback. It's independent of payment methods and not tied to zaps or anything.
A generic standard that multiple clients implement would be better than some specific platform that does their own custom paywall scheme.

What other cases there are of services with real customers selling something that isn't "for bitcoiners" that stopped taking fiat payments?
My expectation and hope was always that a percentage of customers would bite the bullet and figure out how to get some coins in order to buy the thing. Most of them would find out it wasn't that hard anyway.
Now imagine if more services did this. Or imagine a world in which bitcoiners produced things that the external world wanted to buy, but was only being sold for Bitcoin?

Some people think Bitcoin doesn't have to scale and get adopted enough to become money, it can just be a "store of value" forever.
The first thing is that these people don't really believe in "storing" anything, they want their "value" to go up, not to be stored, so the discourse is already skewed from the start.
Meanwhile all the value Bitcoin has today and all its price growth came from the expectation that it would be used as money (i.e. means of payment etc) at some point.
Because random pubkeys stored on blockchains are just worthless bytes, if we stop making moves towards the only real goal (commerce adoption), then eventually markets notice and all the side "store of value" and related discourses are exposed to reality.
Remember those people that used to say Bitcoin was a ponzi scheme -- I don't know, Peter Schiff, Jorge Stolfi? Their takes were nonsense to me at first because I had in my mind that everybody believed that Bitcoin would eventually become money, so there was no way this was a game of the greater fool, everybody would benefit, even the last person to buy Bitcoin on Earth would benefit from it.
But no, these people just assumed Bitcoin would never become money, and with that assumption their reasoning makes perfect sense: if Bitcoin doesn't become money then it is nothing but a ponzi scheme -- as most of the shitcoins clearly are.
And now we have all these self-described Bitcoiners who think the same, don't be one of them. And please make them wrong again.

I paid for a meal with Bitcoin recently. The place was very modest and they just had a WoS QR code glued to wall. When I told the old woman at the cashier that I wanted to pay in Bitcoin she just told me the amount and trusted me to type that on my phone and trusted that my wallet would know how to convert that into satoshis at a reasonable exchange rate (she didn't know anything about Bitcoin I'm pretty sure).
Can't we make this better? There could exist a device with buttons where she could type the amount like she did with the credit card machines all other customers were using. She would just press the amount there and handed me a QR code to scan with the amount included, and exchange rate conversion done at some server trusted by the restaurant, it could be fully offline.
I'm just saying this because I was amazed by the fact that so many years have passed and I barely hear about these kinds of issues or the solutions to them. Makes me feel that no one is thinking about the problems of grassroot Bitcoin commerce adoption, which is the most important thing.

I don't know when was the last time you tried or upgraded #nak, but there are some new (or maybe not super new) useful things (and hopefully not too many new bugs) that may interest you:
- "nak profile <pubkey-npub-nprofile-nip05-etc>", easily the most useful of the newish commands, I use it all the time to get the name of some random pubkey I see in the output of other nak commands.
- "nak group info/members/admins <nip29-group-address>", displays information about that group. then there is "nak group chat" that streams the chat room live in readable format, together with "nak group chat send" to send a message (from another terminal); "nak group talk" that yields a URL you can visit to join the group chat room in your browser; "nak group forum" displays the forum view of that group, together with "nak group forum create/comment" for creating a new thread of commenting on an existing thread.
- "nak bunker --profile <name>" stores your bunker data in a file under that name such that you can restart it later easily; then if you use this profile name you can later run "nak bunker connect --profile <name> 'nostrconnect://...'" from another terminal window to connect using the "scan QR code" flow instead of the "paste bunker URI" flow.
- "nak dekey" manages your NIP-4E decoupled encryption key (famously supported in Coop and Jumble DMs).
- "nak git" I think I've mentioned before, but it works pretty well, I use it everyday and as a has ton of subcommands I won't mention here.
- "nak validate" takes events as input and tells if they have all the required tags and in the expected formats according to https://github.com/nostr-protocol/registry-of-kinds.
- also when doing "nak req" or "nak event" you can pass an --outbox flag and nak will figure out the relays to connect to on your behalf, it will do that smartly according to the event authors, tags or parameters in the filters.

Today I saw a comment from @npub1c3g…86r6 on https://zapstore.dev/apps/com.fiatjaf.topaz and I wanted to reply to it.
The Zapstore website wanted me to sign in with an extension to do that, but I only have a bunker, so thought I would open the comment on https://fevela.me and reply from there.
But the Zapstore website doesn't tell me the note id nor it gives me an nevent code, but it does gives me the author npub, so I tried to just visit that profile and wait for the note to be fetched, but I waited and it wasn't.
Turns out the note wasn't in any of the (many) relays of @npub1c3g…86r6, as the command

How many of all Substack "content creators" earn a living? You're talking as if anyone could just go there and write something and they would get paid.
In fact even if you are the new Shakespeare you could still go on Substack and write amazing things and didn't get a dime for them.
Substack probably doesn't do any curation, it's just a place where people can charge their existing audience (that they got through whatever other means including sheer luck, years of thankless unpaid work and being friends with the right people), so Substack is orthogonal to what I'm talking about.

What if we had a relay where new people could manually submit content to and pay a "curation fee", then some smart humans would pocket the fee and manually vet each submission and only allow in those that were deemed high-signal?
Would you browse that relay in order to discover new high-signal content and new people to follow?

I agree.
I'm curious why you became such a Rootstock enthusiast recently, but yes, it's crazy that people aren't using it.
To be fair I tried to use it a couple of times in the past and I struggled a lot with the tooling, the wallets, everything was confusing.
Also I couldn't figure out how to deploy and use a contract myself, but I didn't put too much effort on that part.

This should have been obvious, but occurred to me yesterday that a coalition of miners would never be able to steal from a Drivechain because they would have to agree on the percents beforehand, but they don't know who is going to contribute with how much hashpower during the following months, so there is every incentive for the attack to stop midway.
Add this to the big list of reasons why Drivechain is a safe and good idea.

Has every client stopped offering an option to use imgproxy for autoresizing images?
I remember users could configure their own imgproxy on Snort, Iris and Coracle. Was that a bad idea because no one was using the option and if anyone used they would have a sitting duck imgproxy that anyone else could abuse?

Every part of Nostr that relies on hardcoded "big relays" is a bug and a gate to spamland waiting to be used.
Spam gets to everything, whether it's malicious, automated spam or just someone handwriting something in the wrong place because they were confused.

I don't have any use cases for a local relay, but if anyone has any (besides backing up your own notes) please let me know.
Eventually I think I will try to integrate the https://github.com/KoalaSat/samiz BLE protocol directly in Topaz, but use a separate sub-relay for that. Would be cool and sometimes even useful, who knows.

If we had infrastructure for curating entries, allowing groups to vote on proposed additions and deletions and simple UIs for viewing the list of all items in a list then it would be easy to get rid of the NIPs repository.
It's sad that after so many years all we have are "feed" views. And GitHub continues to be a better platform for browsing and updating text lists of things. Notice that I'm not asking for much.
We would also have to get rid of the NIP numbers, but we could just say "the longform NIP", "the badges NIP" etc and it wouldn't be hard to know what were people talking about.
But if you're reading this and thinking about a complicated system with events being published with votes, proposals, lists of replaceable events with other lists inside or whatever absurdity, please stop. Just use a relay and normal events inside, add and delete. Custom write policies, standard Nostr read API.
#pyramid has a moderated subrelay that is probably 25% there already.

I just realized people talk about "Android".
They know that many different phones and even other types of devices all speak this same "protocol" called "Android". They know that there are many different apps that can be used in Android but not on iPhones. They know that there are many flavors of Android, but that there is something that is the same underlying all of them.
It's not a perfect analogy with Nostr, but regardless of that UX specialists would have led us to believe that no one would be able to understand or care about such technical details, and that these technical details should be hidden at all costs, but they're proven wrong again.
Are there other examples of this phenomenon? I guess there are also email, podcasts, SMS messages, web browsers and HTML (although this is a bad example it's still valid).

I was going to say you could add https://nostrarchives.com and https://antiprimal.net as default search relays, but then I opened the site and searched for a random string and it started searching for things in places like https://czas.plus/ and https://dynasty.libretechsystems.xyz/ -- which I just found out are running #pyramid and actually had a bunch of matches for my search.
The world is confusing.

YouTube has a subscriptions page that used to show me just videos from channels I've subscribed to in chronological order. It was great.
Now most of the screen is filled with some recommended content "for me" (or "most relevant", who knows, they're still tweaking things apparently), which is basically just reordering the same few videos I have in my subscription, such that I can never get a clear picture of what is new and what isn't or what I have already watched or skipped and what I should take a look at.

Having to encrypt a message 4 times and the fact that relays only see a random blob from a random pubkey being sent to them makes it very annoying indeed. I think the spam can be cut on the relay side if relays require AUTH (from the real sender) when accepting the gift-wrap, but that defeats its purpose, so maybe we should just get rid of gift-wrapping entirely.
https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1647 would fix having to do expensive encrypt/decrypt calls to bunkers, but introduces complexity.
I think the expectation of having DMs inside Nostr clients was stupid from day one.

Oh, I see.
Could have been that. But I think the idea there was to standardize NIP-23 syntax (because "Markdown" is not a standard) without breaking it.
But the syntax described there is pretty close to Djot already, i.e. a trimmed down very strict variant of Markdown. If we were to do NIP-23 from scratch today I think Djot would be a better pick. It has a bunch of libraries already anyway, and was made by the guy who created Pandoc, the most experienced person in the world of markup formats, to be the simplest and more lightweight format.

What is the NostrMarkup? The one that is a variant of Asciidoc?
I tried to write an Asciidoc parser from scratch, it was too hard. There are no other parser implementations out there besides the "reference" in Ruby (transpiled to JS as asciidoctor.js). All the other you find on GitHub are illusions, vastly incomplete, because the Asciidoc standard is a mess and way too bloated, it assumes and HTML parser/renderer in many many places, it isn't suitable for a serious protocol. I've joined the official Asciidoc discussion board and asked questions and made suggestions. The reactions I got served to reinforce that position by a lot, it actually made me think things are only going to get worse.

Of course you are right, but there are things more annoying than breaking backwards compatibility. One of them is Asciidoc. Asciidoc was a huge mistake, I got swindled by their marketing.
Also the differences are small (most articles are just text anyway) and there are few implementations, the articles have broken formatting everywhere anyway.
I should have just merged the change sooner to save you a headache, but I was ashamed of doing it and afraid of @npub1m4n…c2jl, and waiting to see what @npub1l2v…ajft would say about it.

The "d" tag doesn't include the relay, only the group identifier. The relay is implied from the context (where you heard about the group, to what relay was it linking, etc). I think that should remain like that, makes migrations very seamless (again, not implemented yet, we'll get to that soon).
The group creator is already exposed, although that's not mandatory, there exists a "create-group" event, and whoever published that is the creator. In any case for most groups it will be clear who is the creator because he will be tagged as an admin by the relay (and in groups smaller than 1000 users it will be obvious that he is an owner regardless of anything) -- of course that won't be true if the group has forked, but in that case I don't know if knowing the creator is still relevant (still, the "create-group" event should probably remain there, although we cannot enforce that it won't be deleted).
I don't like having huge link to a group, because public keys are huge, but I'm not opposed to having the public key added to the "<relay>'<identifier>" address, and I'm not attached to that format either, maybe add just a prefix to the public key? I don't see how that helps anyone though.
But can't you also imagine a group that doesn't have a master public key? Maybe the group is an equal partnership between 3 people, they own the group together, it isn't clear who is the "creator", and it shouldn't be? Or maybe the group is owned by an organization, but the organization doesn't have a public key, only people who act on behalf of the organization have, so they're granted temporary admin powers. Maybe the creator died, in that case having the group attached to him would only be history, not useful in practice.
I don't know, I guess I just don't understand why you're so attached to the idea of a group having a specific owner written in them.

Your scheme also seems to work at a first glance, but it's computationally expensive and cannot be used to do "private" groups, unless you introduce encryption, then it gets more even more complex and inefficient. I believe a similar approach was attempted at NIP-87 (which was never merged but was implemented in Coracle and somewhere else I forgot and actually used for a while).
The biggest problem with it, though, is that in order to get a consistent view of who is in the group you need someone controlling it. In the most obvious scheme that would be the pubkey that created the group -- or you can come up with something else like a threshold scheme or some form of democracy, at the cost of complexity -- in any case there is always still a group of people that controls everything.
In NIP-29 the group has admins, but they don't own the group. The relay enforces the admin's policies, but if a part of the members is unhappy with the administration they can fork the group and move it to another relay that will pledge to serving them, then the group can continue there. For small friends groups this isn't a concern, but it solves many issues that have happened in big Reddit communities, for example.

I don't know why @npub1p23…rnl6 left, but it didn't seem to be because anyone did anything wrong to him, it seems to me that he just wasn't enjoying. It is bad news, but what can I do? I don't enjoy Nostr most of the time either. Nostr isn't an enjoyable place, it's a construction site.
I don't think Bluesky is problematic because it's full of leftists, I think the protocol is bad. If the protocol was good I would be supporting it and helping build it even if it was full of leftists.

Sorry about that, I'm tired of seeing people claim Nostr isn't decentralized always for the wrong reasons and never expand on their claims.
But in your case I think you really misunderstood things. The idea of Nostr isn't that messages are evenly spread across the network. I do not believe that is the correct approach at all. Although nothing prevents someone from trying and would be fun to see more p2p spreading of Nostr events I don't think that will scale, so I wouldn't focus on it.
Instead the approach Nostr takes is to let each person publish to one or more servers they choose. Decentralization happens by not requiring publishers to be present on a central location, but by allowing readers to go to whatever location necessary in order to fetch their content.
So even if everybody is using the same relay at one point, the network is still "decentralized" as long as clients are doing their job correctly and anyone can move out of that central relay anytime they want and start publishing to his own personal relay in his basement: all their followers will continue to get his updates automatically, now from the new relay.

Among 20+ microblogging clients there are only 2 that don't follow the promote centralized paradigms, soon to be 1, eventually 0.
So I don't get why you are spreading so much bullshit, it would be much more helpful and productive if you either shut up entirely or started speaking more concretely and directly about the problems you're seeing and the solutions you have in mind.
