I agree it was very broken for a long time, but it has improved a lot in the past weeks. At least I can reliably get URL previews on Telegram every time now.
But I insist that URLs/domains are a problem, if you redirect people to njump.me that requires that njump.me is up there to handle it. Even if it was much faster it could still become evil someday, or go down. Now if you send people to njump.to so it can split traffic you move the problem to Gigi.
In any case, a server that just splits the traffic and returns redirects can handle 1000x more traffic than a real njump server that has to do all the relay and local cache dance, so @npub1der…xzpc's JavaScript server is probably fine for now.

Why is Android so stupid that if you open an app B from a link inside app A then app B is somehow opened inside app A, not as an independent process?
Now you can't alternate between the two apps because there is only a single app B opened. In order to go back to app A you have to press "back" on app B many times and hope it closes and control is returned to app A.
Even if you try to reopen a new instance of app A it will just bring you back to app B that is running inside app A. It's impossible to do anything.

Joseph's Squares is a game to be played on pen and paper. It goes like this:
1. draw 2 squares;
2. player A draws a line between one side of a square to a side of the other square;
3. once a side of a square has been connected it can't be used again.
4. lines can't be crossed ever.
5. player B draws another line again connecting one unused side of a square to an unused side of the other square.
6. and so on until a player can't draw any lines, that player loses.
In a game with 2 squares the second player can always easily win, but once you get that you can start playing with 3 squares, 4 squares and so on.
It isn't meant to be the best game of all times, just better than tic-tac-toe.
I haven't tried to play with triangles or other shapes but could be interesting too.
You have to be a reasonable human and not try to draw confusing lines. These confusing lines cannot change the game in theory but they can confuse everything and ruin the game for both players (it's ridiculous that I have to say that but many people to whom I tried to teach the game had this stupid idea, so I'm saying here).

This is a simple idea but I had never thought about it until now, so maybe some people may benefit from it:
I always thought NIP-50 (search) was a hackish solution to an insurmountable problem, that of "global search". In order to search for something one must be like Google, one must index the entire network, it's centralizing and so on. And because of that it made little sense for normal relays to implement such a thing.
I just now realized, after using @npub1der…xzpc's https://search.dergigi.com/ many times, that the majority of searches are scoped by author, therefore it makes total sense for a client to query the author's outbox relays and send search queries to them directly instead of to some nameless global search engine -- which means that it makes total sense for small relays, personal relays, and random outbox relays of any kind to support search REQs.

There are probably a ton of other use cases, like internal relays, temporary relays for conferences and closed events, more utility use cases like I don't know you publish something there and the relay prints your message and mails it to you (silly example, this doesn't even make sense as a feed).
I'm trying to have more crazy ideas, but I bet other people will have them better once the possibility is unlocked in their minds. But also only in the scope of the relay classes listed above we already have enough room to fulfill many more interesting use cases.
Just communities and curation are already enough to justify having relay-feed-capable clients. The curation case is infinitely useful. Almost every one of the "whatever-on-Nostr" use cases (music on Nostr, business listings on Nostr, geocaching on Nostr, uber on Nostr, wikipedia on Nostr, livestreaming on Nostr etc) would benefit drastically from having curated relays, and it could become a profitable thing eventually, as I probably wrote on #naddr1qq…85e2 (but I didn't reread). There is also the case for "publications"/magazines which I've seen many people talking about and to me that is a textbook example of a curated relay.
Many of the DVM use cases could also be reframed as relays with special functionality and they would work much better and be simpler.

I don't see how Couchsurfing qualifies since it was a private platform with governance rules entirely dictated by the owner of the website. Sure, there was a community there or something like that, but there are also communities on Facebook and no one says Facebook is a commons.
I also don't understand how Cashu is an example of commons, is it because it's a protocol? Except for the fact that they expose a standardized HTTP API, the mints themselves are privately owned like any business. Unless you're trying to say the market in general is a commons.

Very popular with Opera users and users who are very eager to read events that do not exist from randomly inactive pubkeys.
I don't know, I've spent countless hours trying to improve or fix this situation. I can't identify any blockable pattern aside from the tons of traffic already being blocked, but I also don't have experience with this stuff. It does feel very erratic and nonsense, and coming from a large number of IP addresses, but it's probably not a targeted DDoS in the classic sense.

This is amazing, it's all I always wanted.
Some issues:
- the settings are not persisted over sessions.
- the time limits could be more flexible, for example when fetching some relay feeds like wss://relays.land/spatianostra I get too few notes because of the hard limits on timestamps even though the relay has a very small note frequency.

I made this extension: https://github.com/fiatjaf/nostr-web-archiver/releases/tag/whatever, which is heavily modified from that other one.
Damn, this "Lit" framework for making webgarbage is truly horrible, and this codebase is a mess worse than mine, but I'm glad they have the dirty parts of actually archiving the pages working pretty well.
Then there is https://websitestr.netlify.app/ for browsing archives from others.
Please someone test this. If I have to test it again myself I'll cry. I must wait some days now to see if Google approves this extension on their store, meanwhile you can install it manually from the link above.

That's true, but I think something like that should be the basis for both. Telegram has groups that require invites and groups that anyone can join at will, but they're the same underneath and in both cases these groups have an "owner".
Now you only need to have a group like that (it's the default for most such style groups that exist today, for example, in https://chachi.chat/) and a relay that allows anyone to join, but only if they fit some arbitrary anti-bot requirements.

https://njump.me/ is being hammered with infinite requests for some days and it's being hard to deliver a good service under these circumstances. Weirdly we do have IP rate-limits and a bunch of other measures in place, but they're not preventing the flood.
Anyway, I took it down to fix some unrelated bugs for a while because it wasn't really working anyway. Now the bugs should be fixed and it should be back online in all its slowness.

The best approach (and to me the only that doesn't have crucial flaws) I could think of is still the NIP-29 one: groups are identified by a random id and can have owners and mods and rules, but the rules are enforced by a specific trusted relay. So in fact a group "address" is given by id+relay.
If the relay goes offline or become evil groups can just move to a different relay.
Anyone can also fork the group by reusing its id but defining a different relay that accepts the new ownership.

nostr-tools is somewhat erratic. Depending on the version it will take arrays or single-filters, and aggregate them or not in a single REQ or spread them into multiple REQs. It did this last thing for a while when we were investigating moving the entirety of Nostr to single-filter REQs, but that didn't work because the forces of ossification are too strong, so now on the latest nostr-tools you can get multiple filters on the same REQ but only if you use the same relay multiple times in a call to subscribeMap().

It's not proof it works unfortunately because my notes are being slurped from my relays to nostr.band, Primal etc almost immediately now. Maybe I should switch to other relays.

So you get this world in which all the problems of selective censorship are "solved" not by the app (i.e. the centralized server) censoring things, but by giving the user the tools to censor what he wants. This will obviously break because the censorship is never about what you want to see, but about what you want to prevent others from seeing, so there will be pressure for the app to apply absolute censorship. And the app owners themselves will want to censor some things, like they have done with CSAM from day one, and no one disagrees with that at first, but then as time passes their opinions will change too, just like it happens on every platform.
The same applies to the choice of algorithms: users are free to choose, but only within the limits of what the app allows them and for as long as the app allows them.

Oh, in the beginning of the interview Masnick talks about "freedom of association" and the idea that each server should be able to have their own rules, much in the veins of #nevent1q…ept7 so I thought he was going in the right direction, but later he forgets that entirely and reverts to the all-powerful "app" paradigm above.
It could be that he had good ideas that could have lead him to something more like Nostr with sovereign servers that make their own rules, but them he got confused by the weird view presented to him by the Bluesky team that involves "labeling" and "custom algorithmic feeds".
I've seen many people (although that is decreasing now) talk about those things (they often use the misnomer "algorithmic choice" which makes no sense) as if they were relevant to the discussion of "Bluesky decentralization", but they're not.
They are very cool and elegant and I understand why people would like the idea, but they are just features provided by a centralized "app" (in fact they assume a centralized server and can only work with that), they're not principles of a decentralized protocol.

I've listened to it.
It's so vague when they say "Bluesky will be more decentralized". They have been saying this for years, and a bunch of their users read that as "federation", assuming they will become like Mastodon (because that's the only example of decentralized social network they know), but in fact Bluesky has never planned to be like Mastodon at all and all their future-planned-upcoming "decentralization" updates are irrelevant things like people being able to host their own PDS.
At some point it becomes a little more clear that Masnick doesn't have anything in his mind about the "decentralization" other than what Frazee says in the article above: their entire vision consists of this competition between all-powerful "apps".
Masnick says something like "if we have this in place then Bluesky won't be able to become evil because if they do then everybody will migrate to a competitor overnight", and I've seen Frazee also say this in the past, that the entire point of ATProto was that "if everybody realized that Bluesky was doing bad things they could all switch to Skyblue".
I don't know how they don't see how that is impossible to work. A huge part of the current Bluesky userbase is already furious with them, but they're not leaving because of their network effect, it is an immense cost to leave, so the platform can continue to do a lot of bad things, exactly like Facebook and everything else. Maybe ATProto makes it 5% easier to setup a competitor that can reuse existing software, but software was never the problem.
Right after Masnick said that Rabble started giving the example of how the existence of GitLab places a check on GitHub, an the example couldn't be more appropriate. Despite the fact that GitHub doesn't have anywhere near the network-effect that a social networking website has, still the little bit it gets is enough to prevent anyone from leaving at all, even if the overall hate for GitHub has been growing for years.

Notice how the "app" is still a fundamental entity in the scenario. An "app", here, is not a client, it is a server everybody that wants to be in that app have to connect to.
An "app" can do anything it wants, it can ban you, it can shadowban you, it can show you ads, it can require KYC for allowing you in, it can limit what you write or what you see, it can be very good but it has all the tools for being very bad, it's just the exact same thing as the big centralized app-platforms of today and always.
Now imagine the year is ~2005 and ATProto is the big deal, all platforms decide to use ATProto: everybody have your "PDS" that hosts all your posts.
Now Mark Zuckerberg creates an ATProto "app" and calls it Facebook and starts fetching posts from your PDS. Facebook is very cool and everybody is using it to talk about all the things, it becomes the "public square". Fast forward to 2020 and you say you don't like dogs, now Mark Zuckerberg decides to kick you out of Facebook for that.
You still have your PDS but you can't interact with anyone because everybody is using Facebook. How is this any meaningful improvement over anything?

I go to https://translate.kagi.com/ every time I want to translate something on my phone. I also use Firefox for Android just because I can't find any other browser that is not worse (and I avoid browsers as much as possible there).
But still every single time I start typing "tra" I get Google Translate as the only suggestion. "no one should be making that many requests" is REQ ratelimiting by IP, but it's really unexpected that you anyone be hitting that.
Older event should be blocked before the LLM is invoked.

Yes, it is "geographically neutral", I don't know why you're so attached to this.
No, nothing is compatible with Wikipedia articles, not even Wikipedia itself. Wikitext is not a standard, it's not a format, it's a language, wikitext is hell. The only way to parse Wikipedia articles "correctly" is by using the same parser they use which is some cursed mix of JavaScript and PHP.

It seems to fix all the problems I had with Markdown (the unnecessary complexity and ambiguity) and a ton of other problems I had no idea about, looks pretty good.
I think I read somewhere that his Djot parser is 8x faster than his Markdown parser.

A big part of all the existing websites could easily be reframed as relays, i.e. just curated repositories of blobs of "data" (articles, photos, calendar events etc) in the form of Nostr events.
Then people could use the clients they prefer to browse the content of each website in any way they wanted, with no HTML or browsers needed.

The wiki is one of the most important things Nostr has to offer to the world and Markdown is not a solid foundation for that. Markdown is garbage of the highest form.
I thought Asciidoc was going to be a solid foundation, but I'm more and more convinced it isn't either.
What do you think about switching to https://djot.net/?

But njump doesn't render all kinds nicely. For most kinds it will just display the event JSON, and that clients can do too.

Turns out maintaining such a registry is not a task easy enough that can be done in 15 minutes.
I got it started here: https://github.com/fiatjaf/alts
If someone else is better at dealing with AIs than I am maybe you can try making it more useful because aside from the kinds I manually edited most are very useless (well, actually they're not entirely useless, since they have the event kind "name", which is something).
I think we should probably remove the {{pubkey}} and {{created_at}} from the templates, as clients can just always show these anyway, an in a nicer manner than a vague text, since they're present in all events.
