Keychat has two main features: Chat and Browser (Mini Apps).
When your wallet has a balance, your chat messages will pay a sat “stamp” (postage) to the Keychat relay, and the relay will then forward the messages. Your messages can also be forwarded by free relays at the same time. You can add more message relays (free or stamp-paid) in Me → Chat Settings.
If you use Mini Apps in the Keychat Browser—such as Jumble or Nostros (both Nostr web clients)—you need to add paid relays in their own settings pages. For Mini Apps, Keychat acts only as a signer and does not manage a Mini App’s relay configuration.

We had previously discussed internally that showing the seed phrase directly in Keychat isn’t secure. In the latest version, my colleague took a more conservative approach and chose not to display the seed phrase for new users at all.
Users can still back up all their data, including the seed phrase, from the App Settings. We may re-introduce the option to view the seed phrase in a future release under certain conditions—for example, after PIN verification.

The original Signal protocol operates over a private network; when applied to Nostr, a public network, the privacy issue becomes more pronounced.
Although the eavesdropper cannot decrypt the message's content, if the sender's (or recipient's) address remains unchanged, the eavesdropper can still analyze the identity and other information from the communication frequency, timing, etc.
Address refresh means Alice updates the receiving address when sending a new message. The new address is the DH ratchet's new pubkey. When the new address receives a message from Bob, Alice can ensure Bob receives the new address. Alice should listen to the old addresses for some time to avoid missing messages or delays.

In older versions of Keychat, users had to log out from the virtual Home button before they could sign in with a new ID. In the current Keychat, you can simply log out directly inside a Mini App — no need to log out from the Home button first.
However, using **Jumble** as an example: if a user signs in with multiple IDs inside Jumble and then switches IDs within Jumble, the error you encountered will appear. **NIP-07 was never designed with multi-ID support in mind**, so this issue shows up. We’re now reaching out to the Jumble team about it.

This is a very early-stage proposal and does not consider detailed design yet.
Keychat on the phone is the primary device, and Keychat on the computer is the secondary device.
On the phone there are 10 IDs. By default, the first ID is used on the phone, and the second ID is reserved for use on the computer.
After the user has already been using Keychat on their phone, they download and start using Keychat on their computer. On the login page there is a button to log in by scanning a QR code with the phone. When the user scans this code with Keychat on their phone, the second ID is logged in on the computer.
On both the phone and the computer, the first ID and the second ID are linked locally. They are named “Alice’s first ID” and “Alice’s second ID” respectively.
When Bob’s first ID adds Alice’s first ID as a friend, Alice’s first ID will automatically send a message to Bob’s first ID: “This is Alice’s second ID.” If Bob also uses a second ID, his first ID will also automatically send a message to Alice: “This is Bob’s second ID.”
These four IDs then form a small group consisting of four IDs.
If Alice’s first ID pulls Bob’s first ID into an MLS group, after Bob’s first ID joins, it will then pull Bob’s own second ID into the group.
In addition, Alice’s first ID and second ID also have a dedicated chat room. This room can be used to send MLS group invitations, and it can also serve as a personal Notes.

When your wallet has no balance, your messages are only forwarded via free relays. You can change the default free relays in the Keychat settings.

Your messages will only use the Keychat relay when your wallet has a balance, with a 1 sat stamp paid for each message. You can also disable the Keychat relay. When you have no balance, your messages are forwarded using a free relay instead. You can long-press any message you’ve sent and select raw data to see more details.

Because there are so many different Linux distributions, we plan to adopt Flatpak (https://flatpak.org) and publish Keychat on (https://flathub.org) so that Linux users will be able to install Keychat easily from Flathub.

Many users care deeply about whether Keychat will eventually support a true multi-device experience, where the same ID can be used seamlessly across several devices.
Keychat relies on ratchet algorithms from the Signal and MLS protocols, deriving a fresh encryption key for every single message and discarding it after use. This makes the system inherently stateful—the cryptographic state on each device is constantly evolving—and it ensures that both past and future messages remain protected even if a device’s encryption state is later compromised. This property is known as forward secrecy and backward secrecy (also called post-compromise security).
For exactly this reason, Keychat cannot behave like Nostr DMs (NIP-4, NIP-17), which reuse a static encryption key and therefore lack forward and backward secrecy, or like Telegram, which by default does not use end-to-end encryption, and simply allow the same ID to be logged in and used actively on multiple devices at the same time.
When we think about multi-device support in Keychat, we can start from a baseline design. Suppose Alice and Bob each have a smartphone and a computer with Keychat installed. When they chat, those four devices can conceptually form a four-device group, where each pair of devices maintains its own secure session.
From there, we still need a more refined design that improves this experience and avoids relying on centralized servers.

Most conversations about “second-best” Lightning wallet models tend to focus on large global hubs—custodial Lightning wallets or new protocols like Ark and Spark. It’s worth stepping back and mapping out the design space more clearly.
When users run their own Lightning nodes and channels, they are both part of a decentralized network and in full custody of their own funds. This is the ideal wallet model.
In reality, not everyone can do this. That opens up a design space for “second-best” solutions, mainly along two axes: the degree of centralization and the degree of third-party custody.
It’s important to note that centralization and third-party custody do not always perfectly overlap. In other words, a centralized architecture does not necessarily mean that 100% of funds are fully custodial at all times.
1. For wallets like Coinos and Wallet of Satoshi, they are both global hubs and fully custodial: user funds are entirely under the control of the service operator.
2. Ark and Spark also move in the direction of global hubs. They still follow a server–client architecture, but their goal is to allow users to exit unilaterally. If the service fails, users should still be able to move their funds back on-chain into UTXOs they control, getting as close as possible to self-custody.
However, their default transfers do not achieve Lightning’s instant finality. There is a time window in which the service provider and the previous owner of the funds (and in many cases, the operator is also the previous owner) could theoretically collude to double-spend. During those windows, users are not at 100% self-custody over their funds.
3. Lightning Pub takes a different path: its goal is to let more technically capable users provide custodial wallets to their friends and become local micro-hubs.
Its focus is on lowering the technical barrier for “sharing your own Lightning node and channels” with people around you. That’s why Lightning Pub:
1. uses Nostr IDs as the basis for its built-in multi-user account system, and
2. uses encrypted messages relayed over Nostr relays (DM/RPC) to connect front-end wallets with the back-end node.
So Lightning Pub is the Nostr-native Lightning node.
In this sense, Lightning Pub effectively gives more people the opportunity to run their own small Wallet of Satoshi / Coinos–style custodial Lightning wallet, but scoped to a local circle of friends. Because these relationships are often built on existing social trust, the risks normally associated with third-party custody are partially mitigated.
Once large, obvious centralized service hubs emerge, whether they are traditional custodial Lightning wallets or large Ark/Spark operators, they become much easier targets for regulators and governments to shut down.

There’s one issue I’m not sure about—it might be a problem with the Keychat browser. When I tap the play button in the middle, it doesn’t start playing; instead, it brings up the action menu for the message, as shown in the screenshot. The play button on the left edge works normally.

However, the end-to-end encryption scheme for Nostr DMs always uses the Nostr ID’s private key for encryption and lacks both forward secrecy and post-compromise security (PCS). If the private key is ever compromised, all past and future messages are at risk of being decrypted by others.
Because of this, Keychat labels Nostr DMs as “weak encryption” and displays a danger warning in the top-right corner.

1) Before reinstalling Keychat, export your data as shown in the screenshot. This file contains all of your Keychat data.
After installing the new version, go to the login screen, choose Recover ID, and import the data you backed up.
The same data file works across all Keychat platforms — mobile (iOS and Android) and desktop (macOS, Linux, Windows).
2) Right now, Keychat groups can have only one admin, but we’re working on adding the ability to have multiple admins.

To enable multi-device synchronization for Keychat, there is a baseline solution.
Suppose Alice and Bob each have a smartphone and a computer with Keychat installed; when they chat, those four devices can form a four-device pairwise group.
Now we need a better design to improve this experience, and it should avoid relying on centralized servers.

Currently, Keychat only has one Cashu wallet. Later, we will add two more types of (including NWC). All mini apps can use the Cashu wallet to complete Lightning invoice payments.
If you’re just starting to use the Keychat wallet, you can first receive some Lightning payments (keep the amount small, less than 100 sats) or ecash tokens.

We are currently fixing issues in the Keychat wallet that may appear when paying Lightning invoices, such as “proof pending” errors and output-related problems.
We’ve also received many feature suggestions. After reviewing them, we realized there are two main reasons why users keep requesting similar features:
1. Originally, Keychat was designed as an independent chat app, but many users want it to be more connected with Nostr microblogging—for example, better support for Nostr DMs.
2. Keychat was initially meant for communication among friends, where extensive group-management tools aren’t necessary because trust prevents spam. But as more users imagine Keychat being used for larger community groups, they request more admin tools—like multiple moderators and better group controls.
We’ll think carefully about how Keychat can support some of these features—not blindly add everything, but implement what truly makes sense.
We will likely revisit these requests after we finish our current priorities:
Unified push notifications for Android Keychat, and
Voice and video calls (WebRTC-based).

For example, Telegram groups can introduce AI bots to answer questions, which might be a useful feature for Telegram.
If an AI bot is introduced into a Keychat group, it would have to know the group’s encryption keys just like any ordinary member. The AI bot would be able to see all the messages. This seems to undermine the purpose of building high-quality end-to-end encrypted group chats, doesn’t it?
We should think more about this feature.
Additionally, Telegram groups do not offer end-to-end encryption.

Keychat's one-to-one chats and small groups are encrypted using the Signal protocol. Moreover, a small group is a pairwise group; when a member sends a group message, it essentially sends a one-to-one message to the other members. Therefore, the encryption security of small groups is almost equivalent to that of one-to-one chats, but the number of members it can support is limited.
Consequently, our large groups are encrypted with MLS.
The Signal protocol is more suitable for one-to-one chats than MLS because its post-compromise security (PCS) ratcheting occurs more frequently.
Additionally, all Keychat messages (whether one-to-one, small group, or large group) can be intuitively understood using the metaphor of a "letter.” 👇
Keychat uses Signal/MLS protocol to ensure message encryption security and meta-data privacy.
The content of the letter can be exposed easily by opening the envelope. Keychat messages are end-to-end encrypted via Signal/MLS protocol, with a unique encryption key generated for each message. Only the sender and receiver can decrypt the message.
The addresses of both parties on the envelope can be tracked. In theory, this problem is solved if they change addresses daily. So Keychat reuses Signal/MLS protocol to update sending and receiving addresses for nearly every message.
