We are deeply saddened to announce the fatal shooting death of Dr. Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a renowned physicist and director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Centre at MIT. Dr. Loureiro, aged 47, was found shot at his Brookline home on December 15, 2025, and succumbed to his injuries. Bitcoin Core vs. Bitcoin Knots: El debate de OP_RETURN y el futuro de Bitcoin
Si has seguido Bitcoin aunque sea de lejos, seguramente notaste la tensión que está creciendo entre Bitcoin Core y Bitcoin Knots. En la superficie parece una discusión de código y filtros, pero en realidad es un debate sobre qué es Bitcoin en esencia.
¿Debe ser Bitcoin un protocolo neutral e imparable, donde cualquiera puede pagar por poner lo que quiera en un bloque? ¿O debe estar cuidadosamente protegido para evitar abusos, spam y desperdicio?
Este debate no trata solo de unas pocas líneas de código. Trata de si Bitcoin es dinero o si corre el riesgo de convertirse en un patio de juegos sin reglas.
Para entender el fuego cruzado, hay que hablar de OP_RETURN y por qué importa.
OP_RETURN es una función en el lenguaje de scripts de Bitcoin que permite adjuntar datos a una transacción. Al principio se usó de manera limitada, para cosas útiles como registrar marcas de tiempo o demostrar la propiedad de activos digitales. Pero con la llegada de Ordinals, la gente descubrió que podía meter imágenes enteras, textos o memes dentro de transacciones de Bitcoin. De repente, los bloques que antes se llenaban de pagos y transferencias ahora contenían inscripciones y coleccionables.
Para muchos, esto fue el punto de quiebre. Bitcoin está diseñado para ser dinero, dicen, no un sistema de almacenamiento permanente para imágenes. Pero la réplica es aún más fuerte: Bitcoin es sin permisos. Si alguien está dispuesto a pagar la comisión por inscribir una imagen, ¿quién tiene derecho a decir que no debería hacerlo?
Aquí es donde aparece la división entre Core y Knots.
Los desarrolladores de Bitcoin Core han ido eliminando silenciosamente antiguos “filtros” en el código que bloqueaban ciertos tipos de transacciones consideradas inútiles. Su razonamiento es sencillo: los filtros de spam no funcionan en redes descentralizadas. Si bloqueas un patrón de transacción, el atacante cambia de técnica y vuelve a colarse. Es un juego interminable de gato y ratón que exige reglas nuevas constantemente. Y esas reglas tendrían que venir de alguna autoridad central. En el momento en que alguien decide qué transacciones son válidas y cuáles no, Bitcoin deja de ser neutral. La postura de Core es clara: las comisiones son el único filtro sostenible. Si alguien quiere usar espacio en bloques para Ordinals, que lo haga — pero tendrá que pagarlo.
Knots, en cambio, sostiene lo opuesto. Bajo el liderazgo de Luke Dashjr, Knots incluye filtros más estrictos diseñados para mantener fuera del blockchain los datos no financieros. Según esta visión, permitir que Bitcoin se llene de inscripciones socava su identidad como dinero. Ellos argumentan que proteger la integridad de la red exige intervención activa. De lo contrario, el espacio en bloques podría encarecerse tanto que las transacciones comunes queden desplazadas, dañando la utilidad de Bitcoin como moneda.
Ambos lados comparten el mismo objetivo: que Bitcoin sea dinero sólido. Pero discrepan en el camino. Core insiste en que la neutralidad y las comisiones de mercado son la única vía segura. Knots insiste en que hay que intervenir para evitar que Bitcoin se ahogue en ruido.
Lo que hace a este debate tan crucial no es si algunos monos pixelados o memes se inscriben en Bitcoin. Lo que está en juego es el precedente. Si los desarrolladores empiezan a trazar la línea entre transacciones legítimas e ilegítimas, Bitcoin deja de ser neutral. Pero si nunca trazan esa línea, Bitcoin corre el riesgo de usarse como juguete, con el costo trasladado a quienes solo quieren enviar dinero.
No es la primera vez que Bitcoin enfrenta este dilema. Las guerras del tamaño de bloque, SegWit y Taproot fueron momentos donde la comunidad luchó con las mismas preguntas: neutralidad, escalabilidad, visión. Cada vez, Bitcoin sobrevivió, pero cada vez también cambió. El debate sobre OP_RETURN y Ordinals es simplemente la siguiente ronda en la pelea por el alma de Bitcoin.
Las apuestas están claras. Si prevalece la visión de Core, Bitcoin seguirá siendo radicalmente neutral, sus reglas grabadas en código y defendidas solo por proof-of-work y comisiones. Si prevalece Knots, Bitcoin será un sistema más curado, donde los desarrolladores actúan como guardianes de lo que cuenta como uso “legítimo”. Ambos caminos tienen riesgos, y ambos caminos definen qué tipo de sistema estamos construyendo para los próximos cincuenta años.
Lo fascinante de Bitcoin no es que estos debates existan, sino que nunca se cierran del todo. La tensión entre neutralidad y protección siempre estará ahí. Ese es el precio de crear dinero fuera del alcance de gobiernos, corporaciones y controles centralizados.
En BitCorner no tomamos partido. Lo importante es que el debate suceda en público, porque la transparencia es lo que mantiene vivo a Bitcoin. Ya sea que aplaudas a Core o a Knots, recuerda: estas discusiones no tratan de imágenes en bloques. Tratan de si Bitcoin seguirá siendo la forma más resiliente y descentralizada de dinero que la humanidad haya creado.
Y eso sí que vale la pena seguirlo de cerca.

🚨 Bitcoin Wallets & the NPM Supply Chain Attack: What You Need to Know
If you’ve seen panic headlines flying around, you’re not alone. A major supply chain attack just hit the JavaScript/NPM ecosystem, and it could affect wallets or apps that rely on NPM packages.
The short version:
• A popular NPM developer’s account was compromised.
• Malicious code was slipped into dozens of core libraries with over a billion weekly downloads.
• This malware silently swaps your Bitcoin address with one controlled by the attacker, and it’s smart enough to make the fake address look almost identical to yours.
👉 That’s why you should double-check every single character of the address you see before signing or sending funds.

🧨 Why This Matters for Bitcoiners
Even though this started in the “developer world,” Bitcoiners aren’t immune. Many wallets and companion apps are written in JavaScript and pull dependencies from NPM. That’s where the risk lies.
Some hardware wallets are fine — as long as you verify the receiving address on the device screen itself. But if the companion software is compromised, it could trick you into approving a transaction you didn’t intend.
This attack is nasty because it doesn’t just swap in any random scam address. It uses an algorithm to pick an address that looks visually similar to your real one. Blink, and you won’t notice the difference.

🛑 Don’t Panic. Do This Instead:
1. If you’re not making an on-chain transaction right now, relax. You’re safe.
2. Never sign blindly. Always verify the address on your hardware wallet screen, not just the software.
3. Use unaffected wallets (see list below).
4. If you must transact urgently, consider using Sparrow Wallet, which doesn’t rely on NPM/JavaScript.

Parece increíble, pero casi no hay información en español sobre lo que acaba de pasar: un ataque masivo a la cadena de suministro en el ecosistema JavaScript/NPM que podría afectar a wallets y apps de Bitcoin que dependen de estas librerías.
Esto no es un bug menor. Estamos hablando de:
• Un desarrollador popular en NPM fue comprometido.
• Se publicaron versiones maliciosas de docenas de librerías con más de mil millones de descargas semanales.
• El malware cambia silenciosamente tu dirección de Bitcoin por una del atacante, y lo hace con inteligencia: escoge una dirección casi idéntica a la tuya para que no notes la diferencia.
👉 Por eso debes revisar cada carácter de la dirección en la pantalla de tu hardware wallet antes de firmar cualquier transacción.

🧨 ¿Por qué esto importa a los Bitcoiners?
Aunque comenzó en el mundo “dev”, los Bitcoiners no están a salvo. Muchas wallets y apps compañeras están escritas en JavaScript y dependen de NPM. Ahí está el punto débil.
El hardware en sí no está comprometido, pero si la app compañera lo está, te puede engañar para firmar una transacción falsa.
