A video circulating online this week showing Chicago police arresting two men, including one who took a swing at a cop on camera, has an interesting and increasingly familiar twist: the guy who took the swing identified himself at the scene as one of the city’s “peacekeepers.”
According to CPD, it all started when cops saw 30-year-old Douglass Simmons driving a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe without a front license plate and tried to pull him over near the intersection of Campbell and Jackson at 1:10 p.m. Monday.
Simmons allegedly bailed out of the car and ran. But the cops caught up with him and that’s when the peacekeeper, wearing a red shirt with a large “V” on the back, stepped in.
The “peacekeeper” is identified as Chester Alexander, 30. His arrest report said officers were arresting Simmons when Alexander and others “began to yell ‘let him go,’” and Alexander “began stating that he was a peace keeper.” The officer clarified that Alexander was a “violence interrupter [in the] city of Chicago program.”
Officers saw a “crowd become hostile” and several people began to “circle around” the police, the report said, and the cops allegedly saw Alexander standing nearby with clenched fists. They ordered him to step back.
One officer, “in an attempt to create a safe distance between officers and the hostile crowd, redirected [Alexander] by pushing him away and back onto the sidewalk,” the report said.
“At that time is when Chester Alexander swung his left hand and struck [an officer] with his closed fist and immediately took a fighting stance while holding both hands close to his face,” the report continued.
That officer “performed closed hand strikes to Alexander about the chest and performed knee strikes to his stomach area as assisting officers placed handcuffs on Alexander,” according to the report.
The police claim they found 24 pills of suspected ecstasy in the peacekeeper’s pants pocket.
Alexander is charged with felony aggravated battery of a peace officer, felony resisting, and felony possession of a controlled substance.
Simmons, who was already on pretrial release for a pending felony narcotics case, is charged with possessing a stolen vehicle, driving on a revoked license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and resisting police.
Efforts to obtain comment from the “peacekeeping” organization Alexander reportedly works for have been unsuccessful.
So-called peacekeepers have been at the center of a growing number of unpeaceable situations lately.
Just four days before Alexander’s arrest, CWBChicago was first to report that a “peacekeeper” who posed with Gov. JB Pritzker earlier this month was subsequently charged with murder after he allegedly participated in a smash-and-grab burglary that left a man dead on the Magnificent Mile.
