You can make this deterministic and completely client side:
1. Query bootstrap relays for kind 10002 and 3 events. Extract a list of 100s of relays from these. Takes a second or two when I tested it.
2. Hash every relay URL.
3. Hash the user's npub.
4. Use Kademlia XOR-distance to find the 5 relays "closest" to the npub.
5. Use those relays as inboxes for the npub.
6. (Can update this periodically as the global relay set changes.)
An advantage of the deterministic relay set is you can find the inbox relays with just the npub. Solves one of the issues you appear to have with geo-relays.

Interesting read! I've been tinkering with web client stuff.
You can roll up a web app into a single HTML file. A person can download the HTML file and open it directly on their device, or upload it to a server to self-host. Then the hash of index.html is for the whole app.
Browsers thankfully let file:/// loaded HTML files open WebSockets, so Nostr is fully accessible from a static HTML file opened locally on device. I tested this on GNU/Linux & Android in Firefox and Chrome using this HTML page:

Prices are capped on the downside by costs, but not on the upside. E.g. Veblen goods.
I don't think your argument that prices are high in Europe for the reason of regulation is supported by evidence. There are larger factors at play. To take one small example, the cost of erecting a tower in Paraguay is lower because wages are lower because living costs are lower because the GDP is lower. Because operating costs are lower you can offer lower prices. Regulation may be a factor but I don't think it's the main or only one in this case.

Interesting. I note that nobody actually uses the semantic web. They just scrape and extract data from the non-semantic web. Not saying that's better, just reality.
This seems to be what Nostr clients do too - when I search for a user it works even though it doesn't have these pubky style tags. Maybe other people need this feature but for me personally it's not something I have needed when building stuff so far. Nostr's tags are good enough.

Pubky exit: "all you need to do is update that DNS record, and the mainline DHT, and change your provider." (What does "change your provider involve? Copying data?)
Nostr exit: "replace the relay in your relay list with a different one."
Nostr exit can be accomplished in a web client without asking any trusted server to do anything. Relays don't have to be trusted *because* the exit costs are zero.
You're right about relay centralisation concerns. Using the mainline DHT is a good solution. Seems like a useful thing to add to Nostr one day.
I don't understand the value of putting pubkeys in the DNS. Is the problem there that you're worried about authorities censoring/stealing homeserver domain names?
I notice that you can now get an SSL certificate for an IP address through Let's Encrypt. What about using the standard BitTorrent DHT mechanism to link to IPs instead of domain names? That's the whole purpose of non-mutable "announce" calls.

The purchasing power (GDP per capita) of a Paraguayan is lower than the purchasing power of a European. In my experience Europeans have a lot of choice and the prices reflect what the market will bear. I'm a fan of free markets but I don't think regulation is the only, or main factor of the difference you're seeing.

Very good! If you only consider the things you directly experience as being real, and everything else as theatre, everything becomes much simpler. A lot of worries disappear. This is especially true of people you interact with - you can't really know a person through media and social media. Only the people you interact with in every day life, where you get a high bandwidth experience of their words and actions and can develop a proper human relationship.

I used this to build a tiny web app that announces whenever somebody joins my kid's minecraft server. The server uses https://github.com/chr15m/nkv to set a key called 'minecraft-server' every time somebody joins (tailing the log), and we have a phone running the web app listening for those Nostr events and vocalizing them.

The best bang for buck I have found is aider + openrouter and then routing prompts to Gemini 2.5 pro which costs sub-cents per request and is very good at writing code. There are also a bunch of free models on openrouter, though I think you might get charged some tiny amount per request. Being able to switch models easily is great.

Installs nginx, acme.sh, and builds strfry from scratch.

Right, so I guess you could build something like this ("fast apps, algorithmic feeds, and search-engine roles") for Nostr by creating a relay that is not simply a "dumb store" of events, but actually has an opinion about those events and how they fit together. I think what you're saying is this idea is formally represented in the pubky design and it allows you to make a better implementation.
One more question: what is "social tagging graph paradigm"? I've noticed those tags on pubky posts. Why are those useful and how is it different to Nostr's "tags" on events?

A line directly westward would mean they have the same latitude, which they don't. If they don't mean "directly westward" then they just mean at some angle vaguely to the west, which makes this a meaningless tautology equivalent to "America's stonehenge is located to the west of Stonehenge" which is true of any two points on the earth which don't share the same longitude. Maybe I'm missing something.

Given the low exit costs I don't think this characterization is correct. If you find a relay is not propagating or preserving your content you can simply drop it - you don't have to trust relays. Or maybe it's better described as a "trust but verify" model. 🤔

It's nicely iterative. You can get it to make one surgical change and then decide whether to keep it or not.
A good thing about openrouter is it adds a layer between you and Claude so it's slightly better privacy - Anthropic can't directly correlate you with your queries.

An alternative to running a relay for archiving is a small script in the homelab or some other server which simply fetches all events for a particular pubkey from relays and backs them up locally to e.g. file or sqlite.
