I agree completely, but I tried to talk @npub1jlr…ynqn into it so much and in the end he just got more and more entrenched in his position. I sincerely believe the latest update to NIP-29 for "unmanaged" groups brings everything he wants into NIP-29 and Chachi and the existence of https://chachi.chat/pyramid.fiatjaf.com proves it already.
You could just have "h" tags arbitrarily assigned by users to create new "rooms" in unmanaged relays and we would have the "Discord" experience (which to me is horrible but that doesn't matter).
Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't grasp what that is from hodlbod's explanations. Please let me know if you understand it.

If you're talking about my comment I was calling note1 a bad idea, not npubs.
On the other hand maybe we could have avoided the bech32 stuff entirely and made everything more readable if we just had done something like:
npub://<hex-key>?relay=...
nevent://<hex-id>?relay=...
Although there are benefits to bech32 too, so it's hard to judge.

It remains true that in a distant discrete future just the event id will do nothing, just as hints to dead relays won't help, but in a continuous timeframe in which the entire network reads these relay hints, associate them with pubkeys and proceed to update their internal "outbox score" everybody goes forward in time better equipped to make sense of all the mentions.
Oh, also event mentions often come with associated "p" tags, so if a client has some clue about where to fetch events from that pubkey they can use those to try to find the mentioned "e" even if all its relay hints are dead (I guess this is also true for note1, but note1s are not helping anyone build all the required understanding in the meantime).

Well, there is also the KYC phone numbers, the fact that they don't allow alternative clients, and the CIA involvement.
I have also read more than once that just the metadata about conversations is worth more than the actual contents for most use cases, so in that case Signal is already worse than even NIP-17, yes or no? I guess it makes some sense that analysing all the random garbage people say in DMs will be very costly and useless for the most part, while just looking at the overall trends can be much easier and give good insights from a big picture.

To be honest I have no idea of what this discussion is about anymore. If you stated the parts on which you agreed with me it would ease my confusion -- but I'll try to clarify now:
I guess I can say that (1) we both agree Bluesky is not decentralized today; (2) you think it can be decentralized if and when more people start running more BGS and AppViews, I don't think that will happen and even if it does it will be inconsequential; (3) you think Bluesky has some cool features like custom feeds and I agree; (4) you think Bluesky is getting really big because of these cool features and I think they play a very minor role in their growth.
Good summary?
You also seem to think Nostr is broken in many ways and not innovating enough, but these points are vague to me. I would like to know what cool features could or should be added to Nostr and what is more broken so we can try to fix.

No, they are not. The entire idea of Nostr as a censorship-resistant thing was always that clients would connect directly to the original source of events as decided by the publisher, so if I follow you and you decide to publish only to relay.bitcoin.ninja then my client should connect to that server directly and fetch your notes.

They have said over and over (maybe not in these words) that they think it's essential for apps to have a "guarantee" that they have seen all -- i.e. that users have read all that was written to them, or by someone, or with some tag etc -- that implies that the entire ecosystem of apps should rely on a single "relay". Their architecture diagrams also depict all the pieces talking to a single relay, their codebases all point to a single relay. There is no provision anywhere for an app that uses two or more relays.
Of course they will say it is possible for others to run alternative relays, and they want that only insofar as it will validate their idea of decentralization, but the truth is that if someone is running an alternative relay they will not be able to use any of existing online infrastructure -- they will have to run alternative versions of everything configured to point to the new relay URL.
If someone is running a relay today it's probably for hobby purposes, maybe not indexing the full network, someone trying to make their closed little sandbox of atproto, I don't know, a serious relay is already hard to run today, should get increasingly harder and virtually impossibly hard if Bluesky achieves its world domination plans.

What, an "optimization"? Are you suggesting that Bluesky would work today without the optimization, just slightly slower? Or what do you mean by that?
If your information isn't out of the date you probably know that nothing of Bluesky works without the "relay". And sure, you can argue, as you have elsewhere, that Bluesky can change to actually connect directly to PDSes, but then you will need to trash all the labelers, feed generators and app views and the client app codebases, as they all assume the existence of the "relay", and then you'll have to create a query language for the PDSes and proceed to recreate all of these things on the clients directly -- and then obviously you would have just created Nostr again (and then you have to start working on the same problems Nostr has been working on for the past years).
If that ever happens then great, we don't need Nostr anymore -- but if you are indeed following Bluesky you have probably read directly from the Bluesky creators that they do not intend to do any of this decentralized data-fetching stuff ever because they think it is a bad idea to not have a canonical centralized source of data, it's an irreconciliable divide and no "progress towards decentralization" can be expected from them, at least not decentralization in the way we understand it.

The point of this is to say that they must have some form of control to prevent misuse of their free "global state" resources, as they are necessarily limited. Nostr doesn't have such issue because each server is the private property of someone and has their own arbitrary rules. Bluesky the platform must have some arbitrary rules too otherwise it would be spammed to death, but then it is not really an open network anymore and whoever decides what is spam and what isn't has all the censorship power any other closed platform has.

Is it really true that Bluesky has better marketing than Nostr and is a better product than Nostr and that's why it has more users?
Or is only big like that because it has received consistent and relentless praise and free corporate media boostings since day one -- always, to this day, with a big picture of Jack on the side (even though Jack has never been much involved and then cut his ties with them completely) and the word "decentralized" in big letters (even though it isn't decentralized and can never be).
Sure, there are other factors, probably many others, but to ignore this part -- about which we don't have any control -- is not going to lead to a good understanding of our situation and of what we should do.

It's not. Their own people say it over and over and everywhere that they cannot decentralize the "relay" because the entire architecture assumes a single source of truth for all the data, all they can do is hope people will migrate to an alternative server in case the canonical one becomes malicious. PDSes are useless and meaningless because no one talks to them except the "relay".
They also cannot decentralize the identity system. Again, they say it themselves, and their plan is to give control over it to a more neutral party -- which you can say it's a good idea or not, but it's not decentralization.

If you are a bored developer maybe you will be interested in implementing simple NIP-23 Nostr sources support on some open-source RSS reader apps out there for something like $800 each.
The goal is to make it work, record some screencasts and open PRs. If they will merge or not that's their decision and we don't care.
The feature is just to support pasting npub, nip05 or nprofile URIs, use relay hints if available or fetch write relays from kind:10002, then fetch new kind:30023 articles from these relays periodically just like the app already fetches RSS feeds from URLs. No need to bother with comments, likes, anything for now.

What do you mean by diff algorithms? Why do you think diff algorithms are even needed in this case? Maybe I'm missing something, but both text and video and images could all just be replaced entirely, therefore the difficulty is the same everywhere.

I haven't looked too deeply into it yet, so I may be talking complete bullshit here, but so far my impression is that Pubky is 3 things:
1. signed entries published on a DHT that associate a pubkey with an HTTP server
2. HTTP servers that can host any file
3. a superstructure for reading content from these HTTP servers and turning them into a global social network
It's a very elegant structure that sound very compelling to me, but ultimately I don't see how it improves much upon anything Nostr has, and it has significant downsides and unsolved (hidden) problems that Nostr either solves or is trying to solve right now.
2 is cool, but not a very hard problem to solve once you have a way to find these user servers (and, also importantly, someone to host these servers mostly for free). Blossom is doing a similar job with files as first-class citizens.
2 is also not very useful by itself. To make a social network you need a way to efficiently pull content from user servers and display them to users. There is where they came up with 3, which sounds very similar to Bluesky's central big server which they call "Relay". It's a centralized system that cannot possibly become decentralized. It looks like Pubky has accepted that as the only way to do things, and they seem to be planning on hosting one such big server.
1 is trying to be the most decentralized, censorship-resistant system ever for putting out information about public keys -- and we may discuss if it achieves that or not (I am personally very skeptical that DHTs can scale, even though @npub1jvx…qzis going to boldly claim that this is not a topic worth discussing because "Mainline has already proven itself with its bazillion nodes and centuries of existence" truth remains that Torrents do not work without trackers, and no one knows what will happen with the DHT if it has to store billions of records from people all over the world -- https://newsletter.squishy.computer/p/natures-many-attempts-to-evolve-a is one scenario), but all of this mega-decentralization is completely useless if you don't have a decentralized way to load content from people you follow and have to rely on a giant central server hosted by one big corporation.
Pubky's idea seems to be that centralization on content distribution is unavoidable, so they aren't even trying. The idea of Nostr is that such thing isn't unavoidable, so we are trying.

I liked this so much that I wanted to host it directly as the homepage of a khatru relay.
So I started trying to extract the electron stuff that was hardcoded into it and ended up rewriting all the Nostr-related logic and some of the other parts too and ended up with https://git.fiatjaf.com/jouble
It's hosted at https://jouble.surge.sh as a standalone web client, and embedded in https://pyramid.fiatjaf.com/browse for browsing just that relay (although it will load metadata, replies, reactions and parent posts from elsewhere when you click).
